It looks like the changes at Imola will be fact (subscription necessary). The track changes will be these:

Variante Bassa:

And probably, Villeneuve - Tosa:

Interesting. Last time I heard it was just Bassa being gotten rid of. I think you could also probably get away with getting rid of Alta, because it's only a very gradual curve. To bring back Tamburello would mean a lot of run off, so it's unlikely. I know SAFER barriers have been mentioned, but when Ralf crashed at Indy, it was into a SAFER barrier, I believe. So, here's one of my 3 edits of Imola, more of a dream, but everything apart from Tamburello is probably realistic and safe:

We can dream, but as i've said before, i'm sure Tamburello will never be reinstated as it should be, however i like the fast run into tosa, and the death of the bassa.

The old Tamburello has almost no chance of being reinstated. Remember, the track follows the Salerno River, and thus there isn't really room for extended runoff.

People say that, but think about Monaco. There was reclaimed land there, in Coventry my home town - a river runs underneath the main lower precinct of the city. Hidden away when it was built, but it still flows.

They could do it, it's just Senna's memory that is stopping it. Something I'm sure Ayrton wouldn't be happy with.

They could surely make it with an abrasive tarmac run-off nowadays?

I know tarmac run-off is awful, but it'd be better than these silly chicanes we have.

Yeah, they could, alot of things are possible, but they won't happen because as Paul said, it was Senna who lost his life there.

Ralf just missed the SAFER barrier at Indy, so he actually did hit concrete.

Just out of curiosity, who or what entity owns Imola?

McKay has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
How about somebody with loads of money builds an artificial waterway to redirect that river, so they can build aload of runoff and revert to the original tamburello.

why not remove the Variante Alta and Variante Bassa, tighten up the first part of Tamburello a bit, and move the Villeneuve chicane closer to Tosa?

Variante Bassa will be removed.

As for moving Villeneuve closer to Tosa, that would defenitely make sense. None of us ever thought about that.

so is there any news about the new pit for Imola? I've only seen an artists idea of what it could look like.

If you're going to move Villeneuve then why not just remove it all together.

Here's what I'd do:

Get rid of Bassa & tighten Tamburello = possible overtaking spot.
Get rid of Villeneuve = possible overtaking spot into Tosa
Bring back the old Variante Alta
Loosen the 2nd Rivazza for a better run onto the strat/finish straight & switch the pits to the inside. All problems solved & minimal amounts of extra run-off needed + more space for grandstands!

I would keep the Villeneuve chicane, because without it I don't think that there would be enough runoff at Tosa for F1 cars.

And why bring back the old Variante Alta? If the cars can follow closely over the hill, then perhaps they could overtake under braking for Rivazza. Although, the Piratella and Aqua Minerale corners (probably spelt badly, but I'm not Italian... ) are probably hell for F1 areo anyway...

Runoff at Tosa has never been an issue. There could easily be more runoff created at Tosa for F1 coz the river isn't in the way up there.

Why bring back the old Alta? Because it was such a challenge for the drivers, that's why. The new version used this year didn't help overtaking in any way into Rivazza, so if no overtaking's going to happen I'd rather that it was because of a challenging corner than a plain boring one. It's the turn to the right just before Rivazza that prevents overtaking, & the fact that the track really isn't that wide. So yes, Alta doesn't promote overtaking, but I'm still not sure I would want a straight run from Acquae Minerale to Rivazza, mainly coz I'm not convinced that this would really help matters that much. Just bring back the old Alta & I'll be happy!
