EDC Brands Hatch 2009

Hi,

I will be attending the EDC at the modified live event at brands hatch on the 28th of june.

I have been to a british drift championship event but never a european one.

I am wondering... are the rules/regs the same or do they differ? If so in what ways?

Thanks

(Mods feel free to delete this post for gratuitous stupidity).

I remember watching the AutoCar Sideways Challenge at Brands one weekday in the Autumn of 200?. It had me mildly entertained for about 5 minutes watching Rob Huff trying to drive a kind of Nissan Pickup sideways. Other than that is was rather pointless and dreadful.

Whoever the Japanese guy was that they had at Brands a couple of years ago doing a demo in some kind of dedicated drift car though was mighty impressive. If its anything like that it may be mildly entertaining. I presume the best place to watch will be Clearways.

As for rules.. are you saying there ARE some???!!

I guess you have never been to a proper "drift round" then. The cars in The EDC are nearly all what you call "dedicated drift cars"

This video is from this years knockhill round which i found:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_Uq5VwOFso

And by rules i also meant wheather the point scoring system is the same or not! So yes!...there are "rules"

Don`t quite understand the whole 2-cars-on-track-at-once thing??! I always thought Drift was like Ice Dancing - awarded points for technique etc??

I wasn`t aware that Lydden had a good meeting on that day?? I was under the impression it was a BARC-SE meet starting at 12ish but still costing a full ticket price to get in?! Saturday at Lydden will do for me. I`ll be heading to Brands for the bling-iest event in the South East that day. It`s gonna be sick. Dude. You gotta believe it.

(PS - Really hope it hisses it down that day - it`ll be even better. (And funnier)!!)

The twin drifting is something along the lines off: (for the British drifting anyway!) You have to drift better than your opponent! you have two runs to score higher than your opponent, you drift together and get marks out of a total of ten say 6 to one driver, 4 to another. In this case driver one wins, so driver 2 has to win the second round to win overall!!!!!

(sorry for the poor explanation, its easier to watch!)

Can see the point. Having them both out at once makes it easier to compare performance I suppose.... if they keep close enough to each other. It will be interesting to say the least to see how they manage this at Brands if its done that way.

From The EDC website :

"Our competition twin Drift battles are decided as follows:

When the drivers are practicing we select a member the crowd pull numbered balls out of two bags, the balls relate to the drivers numbers/names. As the balls and names are pulled out the twin Drift pairings are established as a completely random process although the two bags are split between the strongest point scores and the weakest.

The cars are then run in twin Drift battles with both drivers having the same focus having to battle against each other within the judging criteria trying to out-do one another and maybe even overtake, pushing each other for go faster while maintaining maximum angle. These battles are scores are based on a maximum of 10 points between both cars, such as 6-4 or 7-3,or an even run as 5-5 for example. Each twin battle consists of 3 runs, a warm up and two scored runs with the cars alternating as the leading car."

They are judged on "
ØSpeed – Highest speed possible into the first corner and throughout the course
ØAngle – Biggest sideways angle on entry and throughout the course
ØLine – Cars must follow the designated ‘Drift Line’ which is sometimes different from a ‘racing line’
ØOverall Presentation – Overall appearance of the entire run, how many oversteer corrections, tyre smoke etc"

From this....it seems this is exactly what they will be doing at the brands hatch round!

lydden wont be fun in the wet, all the minis electrics will get wet and break down... actually thinking about it drifting could be interesting in the wet (but do they still run it in the wet?)

Hi guys, where do I start.....
Firstly I'm the starter for the NFS EDC series.
The cars are all specialist drift cars these days, built to very high spec.
Take a look at this vid, shot by a spectator at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago. It gives an idea of a specators eye view.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnwpx5RHVMY
It is the top eight final and gives an idea of what goes on. The fastest entry speed of the day was 98mph.
The average bhp of the cars is around the 400/500 mark, some a tad more, this one for instance is around 650hp...

The format as regards drifting is pratice first, then 16-8 followed by 8-1 all with a couple of hours gap between.
If you have any questions I'm more than happy to answer them....and yes we can and do still run in the wet.
Regards, Al.

Although Brands Indy is fairly curvy all the way round (good?) its also fairly up-and-downy!!(bad??). Will the Drift element of this meeting be run over in the Clearways area (as per the old Autocar Challenge day) or are you intending to try to use the whole length of the circuit??

At the moment it looks like the cars will be starting from between Druids and Graham Hill Bend with the judged section starting at Surtees and finishing on the Brabham Straight.
The problem with running too far is two fold, firstly, with the horsepower these cars now have the tyres would get shredded very quickly, secondly they can run into cooling problems as they are running at high revs with not a lot of airflow through the rads because they're going sideways (they do run electric fans continuously) and need to return to the start line at a slowish pace to cool down.

Sounds a sensible idea. Just trying to plan my viewing/photography. Looks like I might have to do a little jumping from one side of the circuit to the other for a change! I am getting a little impatient with MSV releasing a timetable for this one.

Beginning to start looking forward to this. There`s a lot of hardcore, traditionalist, race goers on here who tend to avoid this type of event. I`m not saying its my cup of tea, but from what I can tell so far it could be a refreshing change to the usual predictabiltiy of race meets.

I can understand its not everyone's cup of tea, but approached with an open mind it can be very entertaining.
We did a demo there last year with a few cars to get an idea if it would work.

And don't forget, the time Attack cars are getting pretty spectacular when viewed from the right places, this is the RCM Gobstopper.

Hope you enjoy it.

There's also going to be a Gymkhana in the outer paddock, open to the public.
What the organisers are trying to do is make an event that has interest for as many people as possible, stuff like the TA car v the BSB bike and the drag cars etc.
I noticed the advert in this weeks KM as well, so hopefully it will be a good crowd even though it is a last minute event after the cancellation of the Autotuner show.

Hi startline Al...can you confirm this?!! because i need to decide on my seating position!!! Obviously the time attack cars use the whole circuit and it looks like i will have to leave the comfort of paddock hill and move to clark curve or clearways!

Thanks

Yes, it will be run as said, good luck with the running about. The last time I looked the forecast was for a wonderful 25 degrees!
The drift cars will be in the outer paddock if you want a good look at them.
A couple of the more err...flamboyant cars.
