Scotmaps, the contracted provider of Route Notes to all rounds of the Scottish Rally Championship, was sued in 2007 by a competitor who went off at a corner and alleged that the pace notes were incorrect. The case was conducted for the complainant on a no win-no fee basis and claimed £2.5 MILLION damages. He lost, even after appeal, and the whole legal process took until this year.
Meanwhile, the proprietor of Scotmaps, BIll Sturrock, was only protected by one millions worth of insurance. After his defence, he has a re-mortgaged house and £400,000 of legal bills to pay!
That defence wasn't just of him and his business, but of the "Motorsport is dangerous" ethos and motorsport itself. Events could have stopped overnight if anyone could be sued so lightly.
