Credit crunch effect on 2009 grids

We are all aware that a number of big teams in the world of motor sport have recently withdrawn due to financial problems caused by the global credit crunch.

If these big money teams like Honda, Suzuki, and Subaru are struggling I can only assume that many club level competitors will also decide they either can't run a full season in 2009 or maybe not at all.

Whilst I respect the drivers and teams probably very reluctant choice (I'm having to seriously reduce the amount of mileage I cover to marshal in 2009 compared to previous years); I sincerely hope that all the race or rally promoters and organisers and considering ways to ensure that grids are as full as possible.

Competitors, paying spectators, and yes even we marshals can be disappointed with small grids and dull races, and may be reluctant to return for another event. (I know that some small grids result in excellent races but this often not the case).

Many of us like me will stick with marshalling anyway but if money is tight then you will obviously choose to only to attend select events.

I don't pretend to have the answer, but perhaps some struggling championships could be merged.

This may of course have a positive effect on the more cost effective forms of motor sport, as teams or drivers down grade to a cheaper championship.

Hopefully the effect will not be as great as I fear otherwise 2009 could be a very disappointing year motor sport wise.

Reducing entry fees is a good start!

While the idea of merging many of the championships is something I'm enthusiastic about in order (hopefully) to produce less but better motorsport, it's not really a marshalling matter and I think there are already threads on this very subject in racers or Nat and Club forums.
