A great day. I got frozen despite so many layers – my chin didn’t thaw out until I was half way round the M25 – I was facing into the wind at our marshalling post on the inside of Maggots.

I also had time to nip round and meet TimD at his bookshop and buy a very interesting book on Velocettes plus “Negative Gravity” the story of Beatrice Shilling who raced motorbikes at Brooklands and developed a carburettor for spitfires so that the engine didn’t cut out in a dive. She also raced a Lagonda Rapier post war – a special built from a “restorable” saloon (no eligibility police in the 1950’s). Well worth a read – I’ve read mine already.

Back to the Pom – The morning session for track marshals was useful – especially the request from the driver for more use of the blue flag. The first two afternoon sessions were quiet – no need to get the flags out. The thirds session was more lively -I knew it would be when Diffey took to the grass with his brakes locked-on on the first lap – but he seemed to quieten down after that. Only one major spin requiring a tow out of the gravel but quite a few still overtaking under waved yellows.

Marshalled on Tests A &C and finished the day with Mr & Mrs Blair (!) on Coppice Out...
The Mercer was a superb sight and driven very well and quickly.
I rather liked the car sticker, did all competitors get one?

Hello all, just to say that I did indeed get along to man one of the Silverstone rescue units (number 2) and to spend the afternoon watching some very interesting lines from the inside of copse! Knowing that Bugeyed is Duncan I checked the list of comps to discover that there were two of you!!
I know know from the piccie posted that you were NOT the Duncan in the Daimler Sov which is sort of a shame...I was going to ask you whether you ever went in a straight line at any point on the circuit...never mind it looked like the driver was having bucket loads of fun which, to be honest, is what motorsport is all about...see some of you guys at Cadwell later this year?

There were indeed two Duncan's competing, but neither of them was me!

Mrs B and I were Marshalling over at the artic wastelands that are Maggots. Very entertaining during the High Speed Trial!

I have to agree with the comments above - Mikey W-P on the Mercer was superb value, loosing out on sheer power and braking, but making up the time drifting around the bend. Session 3 was fun also, kicked off with Jim Diffey getting on the grass under braking, oil being dropped all over the braking area, a couple of spinners including one that required a tow out of the gravel ... etc.

The Forums own RT was also interesting during the braking test.

Sorry that we didn't manage to seek you out - we'll definately try harder at Cadwell. Thank you to you and all of the other Marshals that make VSCC events possible.

I had the best track time ever in 24 years racing at Silverstone. 0nly one Bentley got away, and it went off song and I clawed it back! Thank you one and all for giving me and my Bugatti so much fun!

I noticed you were doing well. My wife kept saying, "Why are the Bentley's so slow". More in relation to the progress of the Mercer I have to say. "Shut up woman", I said. All a bit embarassing really, especially for a 4 1/2 owner. The Bugs didn't break down either. Glad you enjoyed it. If it is true that there is to be a three hour vintage endurance at Donington, the Bentley "Boys" will not be able to rely upon the Bugs breaking down. Are you entering Mike ?

Mrs B attracts the drivers, or is it scares them, as when she gives them a hug they all are looking for her whistle to attract assistance.

Also, some of them throw up their hands in horror when they pass us on the circuit, or at least, this is what it looks like.

I don't know what we'll be doing at Cadwell - we offered to go to either Race Control or Assembly last year but seem to have been left on flags so far. Last year we were on the section after Mansfield.

Pomeroy Results are out by post.

Pomeroy to one J Diffey BMW 2002 with 444 points of a possible 450 perfect score. He was followed by Charles Knill-Jones (Morgan) with 404 and last years victor Adam Ealand (TR3A) 403. Winston Teague won the Densham with 400 as first Vintage.

Forumistes Eclectic took a third class with 362 and the Tortoise also scraped a third despite his zero in Test B which could have seen him top three with last years Test B numbers. Oh what could have been! PVMW who should have known better and come in the SDone just missed out.

The Tortoise toy was £423 including premium at auction....
I don't think Duncan Pittaway spent that much!

For me that is the fun of the 'POM' in that in true VSCC tradition it is a real leveller where money won't guarantee success...only another 363 days to go until we can try and put the record straight again.

My first award in the Pom after many years of trying.....nice to see the car is going well at last. Apart from the driver, driving better, the only improvement left to make is improving the brakes and losing some weight, it is a 1.5 tonne car!

Absolutely no disrespect to either driver, but can anyone provide a simple explanation as to why the Ford Model T did so much better than the Mercer. The answer has to lie in the application of the formula surely ?
That is, its more to do with the car, than the driver, or is it ?

Yes the Pom is about the car, although the driver is undeniably an important factor...young James is to be applauded. As to Mr Rushton's comments re Bentleys...well they are slow in comparison to real sportscars such as Riley Brooklands. On our day we have even upset the odd Talbot (all are odd) and being off diminutive proportions (except for the gut) I have worked out why the Brunette fella he employs is so quick...he can't see over the end of the bonnet.

Mickey is a top bloke, and a brilliant driver. However, we all make mistakes - mine last year involved an automatic clutch and a tree!

I believe that Mickey had a "little problem" with the braking test (Test D) - known as attacking the cones. This had a serious impact on his overall score. Despite getting 100% on the high speed trial (he deserved at least 110%!) this had a major effect on his overall result. James Collins may not have been as fast on the High Speed Trial, and have had a tyre problem, but he scored consistently in all of the tests.

I look forward to hearing how Mickey does in the Australian GP event in ERA 1A.

Ah, Bugeyed, that explains it. I think I was looking for a warm cup of coffee when the braking test was on. Referring to tree and impact on windscreen, reminds me that the repaired parts will be back from the plater this weekend. Soon be ready for the new season.
