Happy to be corrected, but by my count Ford needs to win every Bathurst until 2021 to catch up to Holden.

Perhaps he's talking about the one before that?

Last time Holden won Bathurst you could still buy a new set of Encyclopedia Britannica.

At the end of the race we had winners (Ford and supporters), losers (like holden and supporters) and a bunch of excuses that are futile.

What a wind-up...

Sadly the truth is out now that our PM sold out the car manufacturers to get a ridiculously unfavourable free trade agreement with China. Good going, Tony.

What rubbish. Our car manufacturers had no intention of ever staying in the manufacturing business in Australia. Successive handouts of hundreds of millions of dollars from governments of both persuasions did absolutely nothing to change their minds. Finally a govt that said enough was enough.

You actually have NO idea. These companies invested hundreds of millions of dollars themselves, which the Government matched.

Do you know how many BILLIONS the Government is giving to the mining industry alone to pull out and sell the minerals that belong to all Australians?

Tens and tens of billions, and they do NOTHING of value, which all 3 car manufacturers DID.

Only after they threatened to throw their toys out of the pram and leave Australia. Extortion at its finest.

Let me guess you are one of the overpaid workers that lost their job ? And you blame the government and expected them to continue to support your protectionist industry.

Oh and BTW I've worked for one of the said manufacturers. I actually have much more idea than you realise.

I'm talking about Ford, Holden and Toyota.

Ford's WAS while the ALP was in power, but nor Holden or Toyota's was.

Call it a conspiracy theory if you like.

A quote from the Feral Treasurer:
Quote:
On Radio National yesterday, the Treasurer said: “There would not have been any free-trade agreements if we hadn’t made the hard decisions about industry assistance. So there would have been no free-trade agreements if Labor were elected.’’
This was after they reneged and pulled $500m of funding the ALP had promised, which prompted Holden and Toyota to subsequently pull out.

@Billy: No I am not, you still have no idea.

I just believe that manufacturing is good for the economy and there's nothing wrong with the Government supporting it. The Government gives money to all sorts of ridiculous ****. Paying millions for Tiger Woods to play Golf, spending tens of millions for sporting World Cups, millions on the Grand Prix. I never saw anything wrong with Government co-investment with overseas companies in a competitive market, especially when Holden and Toyota both had successful export programs.

But it is all gone now.

It would have been more palatable for government to support these companies if they were Australian owned and the profits stayed here.

You must remember that global corporations play a global game.
Ford, Holden & Toyota all published the fact that it cost them $3k to $4k more per car to manufacture in Australia when compared making the same car in other locations around the world.
While it is convenient to blame the government the decision by Holden to cease was also influenced with the need to increase economies of scale in their Korean plants following the wind back of the Chevy brand in Europe. These plants were underutilized for a variety of reasons and are more modern with cheaper labour.
Toyota had similar issues.
Ford had a car that simply did not fit into their worldwide supply chain. In fact many working at Ford Aus saw the future in 2007 when they lost the right to build the Mondeo; the writing was on the wall.

Will certainly be interesting to see the future of V8 Supercars, if there's good racing, I am going to watch regardless of the cars.
