In general, they are a radio service primarily, rather than TV commentators. Sometimes commenting about what's happening on the screen isn't necessarily the best way of doing things as it doesn't always translate to radio.
Some say I'm a RLM fanboy, but I remember the disaster that was the commentary team during the unification. Claiming the Mazda was the first ever diesel prototype, and that the Daytona 24 was the biggest 24 hour race in the world. It was bloody horrific. I always find it a bit iffy when people criticise RLM, because whilst they are not perfect, they're absolutely light years ahead of every other option. |

Starting to wonder how much of a 'factory effort' this Mazda team really is.

It is pretty slow for what's supposed to be a factory effort. Hence my question.

Then why is it not running away with the lead?
I hope someone with a bit more intelligence can answer my question. |

No more a factory effort than Cadillac is, especially with WTR. Mazda is doing things on the cheap compared to Cadillac, combined with the fact that Speedsource has lost their way as a team since the whole Mazda 6 diesel deal.

The Mazda does not. It can lap as fast as any car on a clean lap (which is why it does have a fast lap time), but when it runs up against traffic it struggles to pass them as easily. It's particularly bad in the short straights where the Caddy can get through the Mazda can't get up to speed in the short distance. That's the disadvantage of using a small turbo engine rather than the huge beast of a Caddy. It's also the reason that last year the LMPs were faster over a lap than the DPs, but often lost out in traffic. The DPs had the power to deal with cars easier than the restricted LMPs. |
