For sure the BTCC was the top series, but STW wasnt far behind on its best days. Audi, BMW, Peugeot, Opel were throwing in large sums of money in to that series.

Honda, Nissan, Ford, Alfa and so on. Basicly all manufacturers that where in BTCC also had factory teams in STW. Remember the 4wd Fords? And the JanSpeed Nissans? And the JAS Alfas? So STW for sure wasnt far behind in any way, well maybe TV converage then.

Yes, but you might think that there are reasons to co-operate since a Pug 406 is still a 406, no matter which series under same regulations your running in. Peugeot was a works team in BTCC too, so Peugeot Sport should have been interested in giving support to BTCC. Especially since the cars were very good in the high-ranked STW. Money issue a guess (as always), or "political"?

But indeed, STW was very good with many famous names. Many teams from the golden DTM/ITC days did the cheaper (well at least it was cheaper at first!) super touring instead. Even remember when Volvo seriously considered entering STW instead of BTCC around 1997-98. Luckily they stayed and won '98.

It was because MSD only had a 1 year deal for 1997, which was to be reviewed for 1998. Peugeot Sport in France didn't want to share any info with them that could have been taken to another manufacturer in 1998, should the deal not be renewed. We all know how often teams and manufacturers swapped about back then.

iceman-1987 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Does anyone knows or have some old articule where there was provisional list of wtc cup 96 and what was the selected track?

In italian superturismo 1996 i heard the commentator talking about A1 RING as track and that only some audi's drivers and Alfa romeo with Giovanardi wanted to partecipate.

Second Question: Why after missing 1996 world cup, the FIA didn't try to make a world cup in 1997? in that year BTCC was won by Alain Menu with Renault, STW was won by Laurent Aiello with Peugeot and Italian Superturismo was won by Emanuele Naspetti with BMW. The 3 main championship had 3 different winners.

In 1996 i could understand that drivers and teams thought that Audi was too strong to beat having won 7 different championship in the same year.

Altought i was an Audi fan i think that Audi in 96 was not unbeatable but it was driven by Excelent drivers like Biela, Pirro and Capello who rarely made mistakes and/or DNF.
For example:
in italian Superturismo BMW won 11 races and Audi just 7 and Alfa Romeo 2.
in BTCC Audi won 8 races, BMW 5, Volvo 5, Renault 4, Honda 3, Opel 1,.
in STW Audi won 10 races, BMW 3, Peugeot 3, Honda 2.

The main difference was that in Italian Supeturismo Capello had just one DSQ and took points in 19 on 20 races.
In STW Pirro took points in all 18 races.
in BTCC Biela took points in 24 on 26 races.

what do you think about it?

From memory the A-1 Ring was the original chosen venue but the event never took place. I don't think it ever got close to having an entry list, even a provisional one.

For 1997, the FIA had a manufacturer 'World Cup' award with points scored based on results in other series - Australia, Belgium, Central Europe, Germany, GB, Italy, North America, South America, South-East Asia and Sweden. BMW scored most points, primarily because they were represented in more series than anyone else, although I doubt anyone actually cared.
