WTCC - Round 8 Termas de Rio Hondo (Argentina) 3-4 Aug 2013

Lap distance: 4805 m

I know there will be at least one local driver, JosĂ© MarĂ*a LĂłpez (Pechito), invited to this race. Former GP2 and Renault F1 tester. I do not know which car will he drive. If you do, I will be glad to hear that.

Dudley has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Is this the guy who was linked to the hilariously inept USF1 effort?

Now I see "Pechito" is on WTCC's poster for this race.

Still don't know if he will be driving a BMW or Chevrolet according to the rumours.

Is that Lopez's name in the window of the Wiechers BMW?

Apparently yes, it's him on a BMW.

Except for the terribly photoshopped picture of Pechito, the poster is great!

Three-time (Super) TC 2000 champion JosĂ© MarĂ*a ‘Pechito’ LĂłpez will join the Wiechers-Sport BMW team at next weekend’s round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship at Termas de RĂ*o Hondo, filling in for Fredy Barth who has other commitments.

I see that car does not have great results so far. I have no doubt Pechito can have a better performance than Barth. However, I do not know how good the car/team is.

If I'm remembering correctly, that team and car had 2 outright wins last year at the hands of Stefano D'Aste.

But Barth is also a good driver... the main problem is probably that the BMW really isn't a very good car anymore (relatively speaking).

But at the end of the day, you're right here. Even a proven entity such as the ROAL/Tom Coronel combination isn't doing so well with the BMW this year.

I'd say anyone driving a BMW in a one-off week-end this year is facing a big uphill struggle. Yes Dayraut got 11th from the back at Monza, but how would he have done in dry weather?

Free Practice 1:

Pechito LĂłpez has been doing well so far. We will see by the time of the qualy. The rest is likely to get better with the circuit than him with the car.

Pechito is putting the performances of the regular BMW driver into a totally different perspective.

He's quick up to speed.
But it's just practice. For example Munnich is 14th, were normally he's at the back of the grid.

Michelisz is again(!) the fastest Honda driver. JAS definitely needs to give him a factory car in 2014. He can be a possible title contender

Qualifying:

Really happy with Lopez performance so far this weekend. Always on top of the BMWs, the only one that could pass Q1 and then good enough to start in front the Second Race tomorrow.

Pechito Lopez paid 40,000 euros for a WTCC ride. Other argentinean drivers would Esteban Guerrieri, Matias Rossi and Nestor Girolami wanted to run this race, but probably they did not have the required cash amount. Girolami was trying to go for Castrol Honda Team.
