Used to enjoy watching Torque on the ABC way back when.
Must fish the book out to refresh my memory on the series. RIP Peter, one of our great motoring Journo's |

Thanks Peter for that great ABC TV show Torque, always regular viewing in our household.
Always remember the episode where they test flew the brand new 1975 Cessna 310R that had just arrived in Australia, the aircraft was flown by Rex Aviation demonstration pilot Ron Bastion in and out of Hoxton Park. Now if the ABC would just put the series out on DVD! RIP Peter. |

I remember standing at a ford somewhere in Canberra with a huge crowd when he stalled it in the middle, the place just erupted and gave him a huge cheer. One of the journalists along with David Mackay, Evan Green & Bill Tuckey who actually knew something of which he wrote. RIP Peter.

I remeber one show when he compared the Ford straight six against a Holden 253 V8, sad to say he lost me, then there was towing caravans and boats, lost me again.
When he first started I watched with eager, but sadly, had to turn away and question some of the stuff, bit like others who followed. Still he did give a insight to a lot of people, maybe helped some. RIP Peter |

I was given one of Peter's driving books just before I got my licence.
Just as well as until then I thought apex was a service club. And entry and exit were porno films... First time I ever heard of left foot braking an automatic was in that book. RIP |

I loved "Torque" on the ABC, what a great show, i'd love to see something like that now. Every recent attempt at something similar was a disaster.

A good journo, but unfortunately lost me when he 'came out' as a cross dresser, I just couldn't take him seriously after that.

It’s sad to see the passing of arguably Australia’s biggest motoring industry icon.
It sounds like he had a tough start to life and I think it was very courageous of him to publicly declare his true self as a crossdresser, and to finally achieve his self-described greatest achievement of living as a woman. He drove a winding, bumpy road but finally got to his destination. May he rest in peace. |

Let's not forget that Peter was also a reporter and columnist for Racing Car News. As I said on Tuesday night's show his regular columns where he railed against the incompetence and lack of professionalism of local motorsport of the day still resonates now.
Before Top Gear, Torque was a show that brought motorsport and motoring into the lounge rooms of the average Australian. I remember him test driving John McCormick's Repco Charger and I think it was Kevin Bartlett's Lola F5000 on the show. He was a voice for common sense in the whole silly 70's Supercar debate. He was also a part of a remarkably talented family with his brother Richard one of the country's most widely respected and innovative theatre directors. I had the pleasure of working with him during his all too brief run as director of the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, and through him had the opportunity to briefly meet Peter, both lovely guys. |
