The heart of the problem was that none of the Australian teams built their own cars, they always relied on overseas imports. Had we built our own cars, the state of play overseas in Super Touring may not have had the same effects over here, not just in the state of how strong the class was, but also in regards to the competitive cars available, tuning and maintenance etc...

The rules for Supertouring were written when there was no manufacturer involvement and the rules were left very open to encourage privateer teams to build cars.
Then the first manufacturer came in, saw the open rules, built a car, and wiped the floor clean.
The rules needed to be tighter to keep costs down and keep the interest level of the car companies up.

Interestingly, I recall Australia tried to do a put together a BTCC based series using locally built (non-FIA certified) cars. That never really took off. While the STCC has tried that for '03 and they seem to be doing very well? Different time or just differnt market all together? Go figure?

Would you mean Future Touring? By the time TOCA Australia got serious about that the concept was 2 or 3 years old, had been through a court case with AVESCO, various name changes and was looked upon as just a copy of V8Supercars.

No, I think it was called Super Production? They were the rules that TOCA proposed to replace ST. But after the new organization took over, they introduced something called BTC Tourers instead? I have to applaud ASTC for taking such a proactive measure and support TOCA. Too bad it was never accepted?

THE VOICE should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
For the record, after some considerable work by Tony Fasono Mal Rea's carina in the hands of W Wakefield was a high Qualifier and after borrowing parts from Mcleam Motorsport in the morning practice session prior to race start,it was less than .5 of a second off pole and was on the rev limiter at the bridge prior to the chase.
We quickley changed to ratio's and was looking forward to the race until the crash on the mountain.

That car had a toms engine and in the right hands was a rocket and may still be.....

Mal give it to a great engineer

So I guess the Toyota parts are worn out? Thus the poor performance and reliability of the car?

The latest efforts of ASTEM have been geared towards possibly going towards Super Production, but TOCA's aim for 2001 and beyond was V8 Future Touring. When the series lost it's TV deal though, TOCA bailed. As far as i know TOCA Australia never made any efforts to implememt BTC Touring.

I would agree with that Racer69... TOCA was actually paying for its coverage on the commercial networks, with the sponsorship from BOC largely.

The BOC deal was interesting, the arrangement was with the CEO of the business, not the marketing department, or with multi levels in that business. The CEO left for reasons nor made readily apparent, and the business was 'stuck' with SuperTouring....

If I recall rightly, the BOC deal still had a few years to go when TOCA gave up on it

Strange, I thought 2000-2001 was the final year of the deal made in 1996.

BOC were sponsering John Faulkner (small signage on the car, but still) while they were still sponsering the ASTC.

Just thought I'd add a post to keep this record-setting and irrelevant-to-Australian fans thread going.

I liked it once, in about 95/96 but after then, why, why?

I still really enjoyed up to the end of 1998. Cam McLean sticking it to the Volvo and the Audis was top stuff... and Bathurst that year was a cracker

How is a thread about Australian Super Touring irrelevant to Australian fans?
