Hour Eight Report

The No. 27 Doran Lista Judd Dallara with Didier Theys behind wheel holds the lead in the 40th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona leaderboard remains tight at the top with the No. 37 Intersport Racing Judd Lola, the No. 49 Team Ascari Judd Ascari and the No. 2 Crawford Racing Judd Crawford close behind. Also in the hunt, is the SportsRacing Prototype II class entry of the No. 8 Rand Racing/Risi Competizione Nissan Lola, which sits in the fifth overall position.

Other class leaders include the No. 3 Rocketsports Racing Jaguar (GTS), the No. 57 Seikel Motorsport Porsche GT3 R (GT) and the No. 09 Flis Motorsports Corvette (AGT).

The No. 36 Jim Matthews Racing Elan Riley & Scott has fallen back with an alternator change, but still remains in the overall top 10.

Intersport took the lead over while Doran was in the pits replacing a battery.
Byztek took over GTS while Rocketsports car was in the pits curing a sticking throttle and a brake change.
Risi had to do gearbox work again.
The #49 Ascari is buried in a wall.
The Crawford got pinched into the wall on a restart and damaged the wing and some suspension peices repairable.
#03 Marcos blew up the diff up and is missing a chunk of subframe, the car is currently cruising the Daytona streets looking for repair shop.

I am still rooting for Doran, but the Rand/Risi SRP2 car is poised to take the lead if something goes wrong with Doran, or when Jon Field hits someone or something

Gotta love that RocketSports Jaguar team! Paul Gentillozi (ph) was hysterically funny last night when he was explaining about how he got his passing-the-pace-car penalty ("In every OTHER country in the world, when a guy sticks his hand out the window and waves he means GO ON BY!") AND THEN to explain why he got ANOTHER penalty when he came in to serve the FIRST one, for speeding in the pitlane ["that BLEEP in the pace car stopped right in front of me ... I guess I was a little hot going out ..."] and then finally when they told him he could only drive 3 hours at a time, not 4 ["Those other guys must be OLD!"] I can't wait to see the Trans Am guys this spring and tell them how much I enjoyed that contest. And nice to see Paul and Simo racing together instead of trying to run over one another.

And of course well done to Team Bytzek, although the announcers never DID figure out how to pronounce their name, for keeping the frail and fractious Porsche EVO together as long as they did, and to fight as hard while they were out there, as anybody else could have done. Only next year could we go back to the nice silver paint scheme and lose that scary Maple Leaf motif? Thank you.
