Back to tyres. Certain Austin Rover Group cars of the 80s had a very strange width, and took pretty exclusive and hard to find tyres. For exclusive read expensive!

The Denovo run flat tyres that were fitted to the Mini's at the time gave a very hard ride but when it came to replace one it was cheaper to buy 4 complete wheels and tyres of a different make and size. I seem to remember that they were a metric size and cost an arm and a leg back then !

My friend's mother had exactly that experience with her Mini Clubman.

To fascinate Bob even more- remember the Michelin TRX? Used Metric size wheels that they thought were a good idea but lived a short life....

Back in the WRC period I worked in, Michelin produced rally tyres for rough events like Acroplis filled with a 'run flat' mousse. You always knew which wheels had it- they weighed a ton! probably did more harm to the suspension than the stages.....

Michelin has improved this system since, for the Dakar rally.
John, wasn't some Alfa's series fitted with TRX (33 may be?).
Sorry for that Bob! Cheers!!

Yes, Gerard. Alfasud Green Cloverleaf & Sprint with 'pepperpot' alloys were initially metric-size wheels with the Michelin tyre.

My last Sud was a Green Cloverleaf. I owned it for 20 years & after a few years' of storage, was getting it back on the road, which included getting new tyres. Not having the car at home, I attempted to order some tyres using the measurements quoted in the handbook. "Haven't made those for years" was the response from the Michelin man.

Fortunately my car was from the very end of production, by which time the wheels had been changed to an imperial size.

Incidentally, with the obsessive push for metrification in England I find it amusing that wheel & tyre sizes are universally measured in inches. Likewise TV & computer screens.

Changing the subject Gerard, being Ascension Day & the sun is shining I'm off soon to see classic cars at Chateau Cercamp in Frevent. Do you know it?

I weary of these tyre stories, round and round we go, few fearful of where they tread, I almost black out, a fit is not far off. Oh for someone fitter to wheel me away, you are driving all me nuts, I'm feeling rather flat, and running out of air. Do we not have a safety valve to relieve the pressure I am under?

How was the footy last night? Anyone know?

No! John, simply getting in the groove.

Perhaps you are losing your grip, and feeling deflated, as your pride has been punctured?

Dear, dear, one gets so tyred of Bauble constantly not wanting to talk about cars Wheel have to do something about it. Tread carefully Bauble, we don'twant you to get deflated.

I think he's a troll from a football forum, trying to get us over to the Dark Side.

I'm hoping for some nice pictures too! (I haven't looked at them yet...). Do you just want cars or do you want the dancing girls as well?

I can't get pics on here but I'll find another way.

As usual with the smaller events, an interesting variety of cars ranging from a Ligier to a replica Daytona Cobra Coupe.

Talking of remoulds, I remember a customer bringing a wheel and tyre in years ago because it had a puncture, after investigating I found it had been remoulded over the top of a nail !

I was at Snett all day, helping a mate test our mount for Silly Classic, and it was crowded due to F3, Brit GT, Mini challenge, Ginetta, VW Cup etc competitors all setting up and / or testing for this w/end.

It made me smile observing the age of most competitors in the F3 and support races- I'd say an average of about 10........
