Jonathan F should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Nippon Challenge Cadwell Park 22nd August

Nippon Challenge rounds 9 and 10 @ Cadwell Park 22nd August

On the 22nd of August, the Nippon Challenge makes its way to Cadwell Park for the next two rounds of the 2010 series.

Known as the “Mini Nurburgring” due to its mixture of twists, turns and the spectacular “Mountain”, the track nestles in the picturesque Lincolnshire countryside just a few miles from Louth.

The action is sure to be fast paced and close.

The Nippon Challenge will race alongside the following:

Gaz Shocks Production BMW Championship
MR2 Race Series
Sports 2000
Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship

This will provide a great mix of racing, so why not pop along for an enjoyable day.

Hope to see you there.

Vaughan Fletcher: No:15 GT300 Subaru Cadwell 22nd August 2010

Preview:

Since we last raced here in 2009, the car has undergone a number of changes to improve reliability and reduce lap times. A favourite track of Vaughan’s, we were pleased to be here in better conditions than previously experienced when testing in February!

Pre Race:

Since Lydden Hill, the car has needed some remedial work in order to overcome the issues that saw Vaughan retire from race 2.

By interrogating the data from the lap top, it was found that the water temperature had risen too high, and the safety cut in the ECU had cut the power to the engine, meaning it wouldn’t rev above 4000 rpm.

As there was the problem surrounding the front hub after the first race, it was a rush to get the car to the grid for race 2. With this being the case, there wasn’t enough time to run through the warm up procedure before the race got underway.

During the first few laps of the race, the thermostat didn’t open which meant the coolant temperature in the engine went sky high, yet in the radiator it was still cool. Although a disappointment on the day, it saved the engine from a far more serious meltdown.

For the rest of the rounds (possibly with the exception of Brands) the car will have the thermostat removed to allow the coolant to circulate easier.

The rear diff has been replaced as this was looking like it was on its last legs, following many a hard mile. Vaughan was able to feel that the diff was not up to scratch during the race at Lydden, so replacement was the only option.

A gearbox noise had been noticed over the last couple of races, so it was decided to investigate this before Cadwell. With the box out, it was found to be a problem with the centre diff, so this was rectified and refitted. An inspection of the gears while the box was out, showed everything to be in good order.

All oil and other fluids were also changed in line with the preventative maintenance schedule we’re running to. A couple of Silverstone’s were also needed, to replace the ones knackered by Lydden’s track surface.

The fuel pump has also been renewed as the last one failed mid race, and new rear brake shoes were needed following the last outing at Oulton Park. Upon investigation, there was nothing left of the friction material, which left us at some what of a disadvantage!

Some of the other tyres have been swapped over to the extra wheels kindly supplied by our sponsor “Revolution” wheels. This meant that we wouldn’t have to run mixed rims during a race.

With camping available on the Saturday night and the offer of the Nippon BBQ, the team made the drive across to Cadwell on Saturday afternoon.

Torrential rain hammered down on the circuit until just before midnight, and had done a good job of washing all the rubber off the track, leaving it in a “fresh” state for our early qualifying session.

Race Day:
Warm and dry

Cadwell was playing host to the MSVR Super Saloon and Sports Weekend, which was a packed weekend of racing action that included:

Lotus Elise Trophy
Gaz Shocks Production BMW Championship
Toyo Tires Racing Saloons
Golf GTi Championship
VAG Trophy
Club MSV Track Day Trophy
Nippon Challenge
MR2 Race Series
Sports 2000
Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship

We set the car up for the circuit as best we could to begin with, but we would be checking the condition of the tyres and their temperatures closely.

We would also be watching our fuel usage during qualifying to get a better idea of how much we would need to get us through the race, without carrying any excess weight.

Qualifying:
Weather

GT 300 was made up of:

15. Vaughan Fletcher Subaru Impreza RA
44. Ian Froggatt Subaru Impreza RA
91. Paul Hughes Honda Integra

Running on a larger circuit (just over 2 miles) than our last time out at Lydden, we hoped that being bunched up in qualifying wouldn’t be such an issue.

Out on track, Vaughan let the car and tyres warm up before starting to push for some quick lap times.

There were a couple of new faces out on track for Cadwell, and they were looking on form.

Notably was the championship winning RX7 of Paul Dobson, who would beone to watch for the win at Cadwell in his GT500/Super GT Mazda RX7. He should be setting some quick times, and be a formidable opponent for the front runners.

Both Impreza’s of Froggatt and Gent paid visits to the grass at the “Gooseneck”, but Gent came of worse as the back of the car hit the tyre wall fairly hard which left him with a spot of panel beating before race 1!

The Black and Orange Swift of McLaughlin dropped its oil around “Mansfield” and the bottom part of “The Mountain”, and this signified the end to his qualifying session.

Roger Sibley also didn’t finish qualifying, having a big off to end his day before it had started. Hopefully he will be back to fight again.

Andy McLennan’s Swift loved the layout at Cadwell, and was showing some of the higher powered cars a clean pair of heels.

New boy Edwards in the Subaru Cup was showed he was more than capable of keeping up with the seasoned racers, by placing 2nd in class, just a second behind Howells.

When back in the paddock, we recorded the tyre/brake temperatures and checked the tyre pressures. There was some adjustment required, so this was done, along with topping up with the necessary fuel.

With the track being twisty and narrow, there aren't a lot of overtaking points, so a good qualifying slot will be crucial

When the results came in we had qualified in2nd place with the ultra quick RX7 of Dobson in pole.

Qualified 1st in class
Qualified 2nd overall
Fastest lap: 1:41.224 sec on lap 4 of 8

Race 1
Round 9:

Starting from 2nd place on the inside of the grid we needed a good start to get the run into “Coppice” ahead of guys behind.

With the RX7 of Dobson on pole and Fletcher alongside it was a battle of 2wd V 4wd. When the red lights went out, Vaughan got a great start and rocketed off to take the lead. Quickly on his heels were Froggatt in 2nd and Gent in 3rd. The RX7 had struggled to get the power down off the line, and was at danger of being caught by the charging pack.

The Mazda of Dobson was soon using all his power to good effect, and By “Park” he was back up to 2nd and looking to close on Vaughan.

With Vaughan out in front, Dobson had all the chasing to do, and was soon back up with him. Coming into “Park” again, the RX7 went through on the inside, and took the lead, but only for a short while.

Coming into the “Mountain” Paul dipped a wheel on the grass, resulting in a spin and Vaughan grabbed the opportunity to retake the lead.

In a bit of motoring ballet, Dobson spun the RX7 on its axis and gave charge. Any advantage Vaughan had got was soon overhauled, and by “Park” Dobson was back out in front to take the win, with Vaughan 2nd overall.

Finished 1st in class
Finished 2ndoverall
Fastest lap: 1:40.410 sec on lap 7 of 9

Race 2
Round 10:
Weather

Starting in the same formation as race 1, we knew it was possible to take the lead for our grid position.

In almost a repeat performance from race 1, Vaughan got a great start, and led the pack into “Coppice”. Froggatt in the 2nd ScoobyClinic Impreza slotted in behind us, and the RX7 of Dobson was back in 3rd.

On the 2nd lap, Dobson sped past Froggatt at “Coppice” to make the charge on Vaughan, and he pulled the same overtaking manoeuvre on him to take the lead a couple of laps later.

Hoping for a mistake, Vaughan held on as close as he could to the bumper of the black and silver machine, but having learnt from race 1, he didn’t put a wheel wrong.

With back markers looming, it provided a last ditch attempt, but it was not to be.

Dobson took the win, with Vaughan crossing the line less than a second later.

Finished 1st in class
Finished 2nd overall
Fastest lap: 1:39.918 sec on lap 5 of 9
