GM & Chrylser merger, Could GM & Ford also

Chrysler, GM discuss merger, acquisition: UPDATE: General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC have held preliminary talks about a merger or an acquisition of Chrysler by GM, according to published reports. The Wall Street Journal, citing people it described as familiar with the discussions, reported that Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that owns 80.1 percent of Chrysler and 51 percent of GMAC Financial Services, proposed trading Chrysler's automotive operations to GM. The Journal said Cerberus would receive GM's remaining 49 percent stake in GMAC. The New York Times, also citing people familiar with the talks, reported that the automakers were discussing a merger. The Times did not mention GMAC, a traditional auto lender hit hard by the housing market downturn. The talks have stalled because of the recent turmoil in the financial markets, according to the Journal. Its sources said negotiations could resume if markets stabilize because both GM and Cerberus want to quickly divest the assets under discussion.(Associated Press/Yahoo), no idea how this would affect Dodge or Chevy in NASCAR.(10-11-2008)
UPDATE: General Motors Corp. approached Ford Motor Co. in recent months about a possible merger but Ford called off the talks after the Dearborn, Mich. auto maker concluded it should continue to go it alone, according to a person directly familiar with the talks. GM and Ford already have a joint venture involving six-speed transmissions and have talked about expanding that partnership to include powertrains, according to sources familiar with the discussions.(Wall Street Journal)(10-12-2008)

Preliminary talks. Nothing confirmed. I don't see how wise it would be to swap a car company which could become profitable with GMAC.

Ford are probably thinking that they are on the brink of getting GM for next to nothing anyway, so why merge?

I dont think i could handle GM merging with Ford but i guess its a sign of the times. Hopefully they will shoot GMs CEOs and find some people with a brain.

Heard on the news tonight that Chrysler and Fiat look like merging. Hopefully it saves some jobs and adds some certainty to the lives of the employees of the merged company

Report in today's newspaper suggest that the Fiat link may only be related to making available the technology to make smaller cars. No cash, etc.

So, Fiat 500 in the USA becomes a Chrysler 'something' and yet shares a platform with a Ford product.

And I seem to recall thet a few years ago Fiat were snuggled up with GM.

Presumably they may have to make it a 2 seater. 2 versions, on with side by side seats for normal person use and leaving enough room for the shopping and the other with tandem seats to accommodate those with a slightly larger girth.

Alternatively I suppose Obama could just nationalise the lot into a single entity and then shut half the factories using the other half to make windmills.

Is it a merge with Fiat or does it become like a take over simular to what happened when they "mereged" with Benz a while back. Really that didnt seem to be anything more than Mercedes taken a stake then going in a running the place. I maybe wrong....

It will be a technology sharing partnership, but it Seems it will mostly be FIAT management at the top. The UAW will own 55% of the stock, but it will be non-voting shares - dumb idea IMO.

Fiat have done such a good job over the years. It was only 8 or 9 years ago that Fiat was in serious trouble. Fiat has also had great trouble in finding someone to lead the comapny since Gianni Agnelli passed away.

Yes, us Poncho fans/owners are in mourning. The end of a great brand and some very solid recent offerings care of Australia. My understanding is that Hummer, Saab, and Saturn are for sale.

My frustration is with them keeping Buick. Traditional Buick buyers are either dead or dieing and it is their absolute weakest product. The brand name is a hit in China, but the products are different than what they sell here. Pontiac sold twice as many cars a Buick last year, what's the point?

Yes, Obama will force the manufacturers to sell smaller vehicles that no one will buy solving the problem entirely! Yes we can!
