Its a fabulous event to be it, have been trying to get back there since 2008!
From our experience, there's some things worth thinking about:
1. Jetlag - we did Singapore F1 on the way (which as it was running to European time, wasn't hard to adjust). If you're going direct to Bathurst, I'd be really careful to give yourself time to acclimatise as the days start at 0430 ish for sign on!
2. Accomodation. We hired a small camper (Ford Transit sized!) in Sydney - be careful to tell them you're going to Bathurst. But also be clear you're not spectating on the Mountain, that instead you'll be taking care of the van and returning it undamaged and clean - they tried to charge us silly amounts of deposit and then returning it dirty. We ran it though a car wash and after explaining our situation, the manager was super happy with its condition. The camper wasn't expensive, but it had very limited space (you had to get out of bed to open the fridge!) It also had limited blankets - and as we had frost several nights, it was chuffing cold!
3 Swag - we were given (from memory) a jacket, two sweatshirts, etc, that were very welcome but adds to your carry home baggage!
4. Aussies wear white - a pair of painters trousers/white jeans and long sleeved shirts will help you blend in!
5. Take exchange goods - marshal club patches and/or pin badges are £2 or so and make great gifts to the local marshals!
6. Try kangaroo steaks (a lot cheaper than beef, available in supermarkets, and very tasty and healthy!)
7. Be prepared for VERY early starts!
