Business Plan for (Re)building a Race Track

I am working on a business plan for my MBA class on bringing back an old track 30 mile away from me. Are they any examples out there that I can use for either reconstruction or new track development?

I thin Zandvoort is a decent example. It went bankrupt in 1985 and after that it was "reborn", the new owners sold some of the track and built a smaller track, started the Masters of F3 and finaly built an extension using what was left of the original track and a new section.

Business Plan for (Re)building a Race Track

Greetings,

I have been involved in many new circuit projects around the Gulf region. I would be happy to assist you in almost all of the areas; business planning, financial modelling, technical (re)design, operational aspects. Would you be able to list some specific questions / issues that you are looking at?

Virginia International Raceway would be a good one. Very popular in the 60's and 70's then was left to rot and turned into a cow field. New owners uncovered the old track surface and totally rebuilt the whole place into a fine facility.

It is Greenwood Roadway that we are looking at.

I am trying to get some ideas on current safety requirements and costs for these items. Any ideas?

We do have the rough business plan completed if anyone wants me to send it to them to help us refine it.

This is the circuit my dad(rip) used to take me when I was a little kid back in the early 70's. I used to watch road racing and drag racing, and I thought this thing was big I was very impressed with the sound of cars, the exitement of the races, and it all seemed so big for me at the time.

The circuit is abandoned now, like they say,,turned into a cow passture land, and some folks are doing clasdestine drag racing there, but I wouldn't recomend watching as you can get mugged ther now.

I went one time(at daylight) and actually rode the remains of the course in my car, and realized how small it really was. It was a mystic experience, to drive around the track, though the infield it's totally covered by vegetation, but I can almost hear the roaring of the Corvettes and the Porsches dueling again, I swear it brought tears to my eyes just to remember when I was 8 or 9 and my dad bringing me to the races!

I talked to the guy "runing it" now, a school buddy to fix it and make a buisness plan to build a road racing course, but he ain't listening, he's more than happy to make money on drag racing the 1/8 mile.

This is the actual condition:

Sorry for the long story, I thought it was related to this.

What's the track direction?

I agree with Luiggi, it looks very good indeed.

It might well be on a different scale than you're thinking, and they're new tracks, but it couldn't hurt to try to get in touch with the people at Genoa Motorsports Park, High Plains Raceway, or Bluegrass Motorsports Park.

We have been talking with the High Plains Raceway guys already.

We are currently in discussions with the present land owner and plan to get Wilson Motorsports involved once we get some buy-in from the land owner.

So, is there a plan on whether this is a deal of restarting from scratch, or is this a reconstruction (as much as possible) of the old track?

It sounds good, but I have a bit of trepidation simply because, though some of Wilson's tracks are quite nice places, they are not well suited to more powerful machinery. GM quit testing road cars at Barber because of the relatively slow/tight nature of the circuit.

P.S. Which way round did they run Greenwood Raceway? I've checked three or four databases, but cannot find a diagram with a simple direction arrow. Thanks.

Our plan is to keep the original track design and add in current safety requirements. We want to preserve as much of the history here as possible while providing a modern facility for the users. We do not see the original track alignment changing.

The track is set up to run clockwise. Back in the early 1960’s, they were averaging around 85 mph on this track.

We plan to use Wilson Motorsports to assist in the operational factors of this track along with safety requirements.

Luke Kinsella has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I'm a fan of fast tracks, so the layout is superb....however, I think it needs a place for overtaking.
