Cpt. Moose should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
#28

I was a big Davey Allison fan. When he died, I kinda stuck with the ole #28 Texaco/Havoline car. Partially as a tribute to him, and partially becuase I liked the way the Yates team operated. Then all of the sudden this year happned. Chevron Bought Tex and decided that they didn't want to pay as much for sponsorship as they were (about Half of what UPS pays for DJ's car). yates decided he wasn't going to put up with a sponsor going soft so he let them go. And when Rudd and Yates decided to part ways, stuff got really nasty. Thats where I lost track of everything.

Here's what I know:
Rudd will drive for the Wood Bros. in the Motorcraft Car.
Elliot Sadler will take Rudd's place, but the Car will now be the #38 M&Ms car.
Chip ganassi picked up Chev/Tex (all I can figure is someone at Chevron likes Dodge, becuase it otherwise makes no sense).

My Question is: will the #28 be snatched up along with the Chev/Tex sponsor? Or will yates hold on to it for when he helps his son start up his team in 04 or 05? Personally, I don't think the Number should leave Yates, both due to the history and to the fact that yates, not the Sponsor, should control it.

I thought I had heard that the #28 number was going to the Rudd's Wood Brothers ride but this would require negotiation and payment to Robert Yates.

Well, I'd rather it be vacant than be snatched up by Ganassi or some second-rank team.

Whats interesting is that Haas-Carter couldnt pick up Texaco especially with their long term association on the CART side.

12ish mil would do that team very nicely and based on the projected Discover exposure numbers of the partial season they ran, had they done the entire season they'd have drawn even with Havoline in the value stakes. But I heard there was a conflict of interest with the son-in-law of one of the Haas guys working at Ganassi, so Haas-Carter/Pegasus Promotions decided not to go after it.

Well, at least the #28 isn't going to Chip. I can hold out hope that Yates will try to field a #28 car in the future. As to Chevaco and Ginassi, they can have each other

last time I checked, Yates didn't sign over the car. He just gave the driver and sponsor their walking papers and then started a new #38 car. New driver, new chief, new sponsor, new cars. But just becuase Ginassi's in bed with Chevaco now doesn't mean he gets the #28. Thats not how it works. So sit your Minardi butt down and watch Jamie run a car with Chevaco, but it ain't gonna have the #28 on the side.

Thanks Stan

Minardi, by your logic Johhny Benson's car should be number 6 and mark Martin's 47, becuase those were the initial numbers of the cars Vavoline and Viagra sponsored. I'll say it again: THE SPONSOR DOESN'T OWN THE NUMBER. The numbers are controlled by NASCAR, who assign them to TEAMS. The team wasn't sold, so unless NASCAR decided to do otherwise, which was my worry when I started this thread, the number stays with Yates.

It won't necessarily be available this year. Yates could keep it this year and not use it at all. The 28 was going to go to Chip if Rudd went to Chip but since he didn't, it stayed with Yates. It could go to someone else next season if Yates doesn't use it this year. The numbers are issued at NASCAR discretion so even if it becomes available unless someone asks for it, I doubt it will be used for a while.

I had secretly hoped that the number 28 would go with Halvoline,
just because of the history of the number & sponsor.
It didn't happen that way so I can adjust.

I just read an interview with Ricky Rudd. He says that RYR has not abandoned the #28. He predicts that a third team with #28 could show up on a limited basis (maybe with a Bush diver) in 04 and he "wouldn't be surprised" to see it return full time by 2005. I know he isn't "in" with RYR anymore. But he no dount heard alot and still hears alot, and I'm inclined to believe him. happy days.

P.S. Shell Petroleum is now the sole lubricant sponsor for RYR. Wouldn't supprise me then to see a shell brand on a new #28.
