Danathar should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Top speed at Indy (not average lap speed)

Does anybody know what the top (peak) speed record for the Indy oval is? Not lap speed averaged, I mean the top speed ever done at any point in time during any lap.

It's obviously at the end of the straights. Can't seem to find that record anywhere?

I don't have a formal record handy, but Dixon said he did 250 there in the early 2000s.

Arie had the fast official lap at 239.2. Like 10ths, I thought I recalled top speeds approaching 250s in the late 90s and early 00s with the old CART cars at California and Michigan, but not at Indy...

The Penske pushrod Mercedes was doing 250 something, as were the Buick engined cars. I can not find the reference, just remember it from the media coverage.

I see Dixon's pole lap yesterday beat Luyendyk's record from 1996.

Arie did a 236 and change in quali in 96. 237+ was a practice lap. Dixon was just over 232.1 average. Don't think anyone eclipse 233 mph for a lap average speed.

They were hittin' 238 this weekend. Back in the CART days, they were topping 240. I don't know what the peak velocity has been and I've searched also.

The 236+ qualifying average was just a tick under 237. A point 9 sumpin' if I recall correctly. The237+ prolly was a practice lap but he also topped 239 in practice the same year.

Aaaaahhh, the CART days. (I know, I know, it was IRL in'96 but they were still the CART ruled cars)

That's incorrect. Arie Luyendyk holds both the 1 lap and 4 lap records, which he set in 1996.

1 lap: 00:37.895, 237.498 Mph, 382.216 km/h.

4 lap: 02:31.908, 236.986 Mph, 381.392 km/h.

https://www.indianapolismotorspeedwa...qualifications

Here he is in the Reynard 95i-Ford Cosworth V8, in which he set those records.

I thought that's what I just posted. hrug: edit: I apologize. It was another board

That's alright, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery....

More:
After being disqualified the night before, Arie Luyendyk returned to the track on the second day of time trials. He set track records on all four laps.[22]

Lap 1: 38.097 seconds, 236.239 mph (new 1-lap track record)
Lap 2: 37.983 seconds, 236.948 mph (new 1-lap track record)
Lap 3: 37.933 seconds, 237.260 mph (new 1-lap track record)
Lap 4: 37.895 seconds, 237.498 mph (all-time 1-lap track record)
Total- 2:31.908, 236.986 mph (all-time 4-lap track record)
Luyendyk's run made him the fastest qualifier in the field, however, as a second-day qualifier, he was forced to line up 20th (behind the first-day qualifiers). Luyendyk's one and four lap track records still stand

Alaso, unofficial because it was just practice, but everyone's clocks confirmed, his 239.260 stands as fastes ever lap.

While researching post 14, I came across this for what it's worth!:
""Arie's trap speed on that lap was 243 mph into turn 1 and 247 mph in to turn 3 (had a tow from robbie unser between T2 and T3), lowest speed in T3 was 237 mph!"

edit: more:

The 35 on the roll hoop confirms the car starting out the month as the backup car before rising to stardom.
