Hewland gearbox and clutch.
Had to do some work on the clutch, on my Ralt F3 RT30. After removing the bell housing and drawing it back, we checked the working of the old clutch which is fine and replaced the plate with a new one. (Not much on a new one either !)
Before placing it all back, I noticed that the drive shaft has an element of play around the release bearing slave (hyd) area. It moves in all directions (apart from back and forth of course) but appears solid, and made this way ? Having only worked on cars before this, I just need to know that this free play is normal in this area. when its back in I presume the front bearing holds it all on place and therefore becomes solid again. Everything worked ok before apart from a judder from the worn out plate which is now replaced thanks. gadgit. Last edited by gadgit; 25 Feb 2005 at 21:09. |

All is OK the other end of the shaft is splined and fits into a female sleeve. It's worth changing the oil seal while you are at it.

The shaft on my RT30 is exactly the same. I would change the seal in the bell housing though. Have you also changed the two O ring seals in the clutch release bearing. These are in the casting of the bellhousing. Bit of a tricky job but they do wear out very quickly. I have got some spares if required so drop me a mail jim@lifeline-fire.co.uk We change the seals on my car at the begining and half way through the year. They have always been a weakness in the RT30. |

thanks Jim, but stuff it !! I've got it all back together over the past few days and I did check the seals and all seems ok so perhaps I'm lucky. only went out four times last year with not to much wear on the seals it should be ok for 4-5 times this year.
You've not flogged the beast then, did you have any interest ? gadgit. |

Had a bit of interest, but no one came forward with folding stuff. Have another one that I am rebuilding at the moment which I will use just for sprinting and keep the silver one in the hope that I can use it in something historic soon!!!.
