1986 Australian Group A Touring Car Racing - Discussion & Results

The thread for everything Australian Gr. A 1986. Intended to include results and general information about the Australian Touring Car Championship, the 2-litre championship, AMSCAR, the Australian Endurance Championship as well as one-off races.

My sources include:
Australian Motor Racing Year 1986/87
Bathurst 1986 (both book and DVD)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_Au...ing_Car_season

Entry lists and official results for qualifying and races would be much appreciated.

As I'm a little occupied otherwise, it will be awhile before I'm fully comitted. Sorry about that, but please let the ball roll!

2/3/1986 - ATCC1 - Amaroo Park, NSW

1986 Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 1 - Amaroo Park, NSW (2/3/1986)

also Round 1 of the Better Brakes AMSCAR Series

Circuit Length: 1.964 km
Race Distance: 52 laps
Weather: Overcast

What a difference 12 months makes! Many more competitive cars rock up for the first round of the ATCC than a year ago. Reigning champ Jim Richards has the pick of either his trusty 635CSi or the new 325i, eventually going with his championship-winning 6-series. Garry Rogers ends up in the 325i, waiting for the. The HDT have their first race meeting of what will be a busy year, combining a full mostly-2-car ATCC campaign with their European adventures. Also aboard Commodores are former Celica campaigner Graeme Bailey and former motorcycle champion Graeme Crosby. Meanwhile, the factory Nissan team are back with their new Skyline for George Fury.

This race is on YouTube, and it's a pretty good one! Again, words don't suffice, so have a watch.

9/3/1986 - ATCC2 - Symmons Plains, TAS

1986 Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 2 - Symmons Plains, TAS (9/3/1986)

Circuit Length: 2.41 km
Race Distance: 40 laps
Weather: Cloudy

As at Amaroo, Fury is fast in practice, but this time the Skyline is able to keep its tyres in good shape. Fury takes pole and leads the first half of the race, before Francevic muscles his way past and opening up a three second lead. Brock was closing in on the blue and white Skyline until an oil filter split, ending his race. Team-mate Harvey had his best ATCC result in many years, finishing the race on the podium, heading Crosby, Johnson and Richards, who again chose the 635. Surprisingly, Richards wasn't the fastest 635 in practice, with Charlie O'Brien qualifying ahead of the JPS car. Unfortunately the crowd were deprived of a good dice between the pair, the Queenslander's race ending on lap one with a broken gear selector.

27/3/1986 - AMSCAR1 - Amaroo Park, NSW

Better Brakes AMSCAR Series
Round 1 (27/3/1986)

Circuit Length: 1.946 km

One for the underdogs! Garry Willmington took a win in his self-built Jaguar, while Charlie O'Brien and Garry Rogers beat the JPS 635s on their home ground, Rogers in Richards championship-winning car from the year before.

Jim Richards' invincibility of 1985 must have seemed a long time ago; three race meetings into the year and the reigning AMSCAR and ATCC champ was still winless.

1986 Under 2 Litre Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 1 - Sandown Park, VIC (13/4/1986)

Circuit Length: 3.9 km
Race Distance: 12 laps

The inaugural race of the Under 2 Litre championship was on the same card as round 3 of the ATCC. A couple of expected entries didn't arrive - including John Giddings' Nissan Gazelle - so the field was padded out with production cars. It was a reasonably exciting race between the factory Toyotas, with John Smith continuing the team's record-setting streak of wins after team-mate Drew Price retired on the last lap.

13/4/1986 - ATCC3 - Sandown Park, VIC

1986 Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 3 - The Castrol Challenge - Sandown Park, VIC (13/4/1986)

Circuit Length: 3.9 km
Race Distance: 21 laps (25 laps scheduled, race duration reduced due to TV commitments)
Weather: Sunny

With Peter Brock racing in Europe, Neal Lowe was entrusted the #05 Commodore in front of the boss's home crowd. Other additions to the field were Glenn Seton in a second Peter Jackson Skyline, another Skyline was on hand for perennial privateer Murray Carter, while Peter McLeod was back with his Commodore after a rebuild.

Francevic and Lowe outgunned polesitter Fury to the first corner, while chaos ensued behind. Seton outbraked himself trying to follow Fury past Harvey, sending the Mobil car into Crosby. Johnson and McLeod ran into each other trying to avoid the mess in front of them, while Richards and Longhurst both copped dented panels. All but Johnson eventually continued, the green Mustang retiring with both front shock absorbers broken. All the action left Francevic, Lowe and Fury well clear of McLeod.

Lowe and Francevic traded the lead a couple of times, until the Volvo pilot punted Lowe into a spin at the hairpin at the end of the back straight. Lowe continued but was unable to make up the lost time. Meanwhile, Fury eventually snuck past Francevic, going on to take the first of four consecutive race wins for the DR30 Skyline at Sandown. An unlucky McLeod lost 4th on the last lap; his fuel pick-up was damaged in the opening lap carnage and was unable to pick up the last few litres.

1986 Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 4 - Adelaide International Raceway, SA (27/4/1986)

Circuit Length: 2.41 km
Race Distance: 60 laps
Weather: Cloudy

The Volvo team expanded to two cars for the Adelaide round, open-wheel ace John Bowe brought in to pilot a newly-imported RHD car. Brock was back, as was Brad Jones in an ex-factory Mitsubishi Starion.

Brock took pole and dominated most of the race, a certain win evaporating with a blown engine on lap 46. Unfortunately, Brock elected to enter the pits from the wrong end (something that's easy to do due to the layout of AIR) and was disqualified so he lost fastest lap honours, too.

Both Nissans retired, while Bowe lost half a lap down the escape road at the end of the straight; he'd mistakenly adjusted the brake bias the wrong way and arrived at turn one with all the braking at the rear...

Through it all came Francevic, taking his third win from four races. Second went to Crosby, who recovered well after running wide at turn one.

This race was very nearly John Bowe's first touring car win. The Taswegian emerged the leader from an early dice with Brock and Fury, pulling out a solid margin. Sadly, with less than 10 laps to go the Volvo overheated, handing the lead to Fury. Brock was delayed by an electrical issue, elevating Seton to second for Nissan's first 1-2.

Round 6 - Surfers Paradise, QLD (18/5/1986)

Circuit Length: 3.2 km
Race Distance: 25 laps
Weather: Sunny

Although the results show a pole followed by a lights-to-flag victory for Peter Brock, it wasn't quite that easy. Brock made a dreadful start and found himself holding Francevic for fourth into turn one, behind Fury, Seton and Crosby. Crosby had a run on Seton heading down to Kelly-Springfield, while Brock closed on the pair of them. Crosby nosed the Systime car inside the Skyline, while Brock dove below both to make it three-wide. It couldn't work... Brock clattered into Crosby, sending both Croz and Seton into the barriers. Up front, Fury looked into his mirrors expecting to see Seton, saw Brock, and speared off! Brock didn't need to be asked twice, and blitzed off into the distance. It would be the last ATCC race victory for a Commodore until 1992. Fury would rejoin in 12th, working his way back up to fourth by the finish, while championship rival Francevic extended his lead with a second.

1/6/1986 - ATCC7 - Calder Park, VIC

1986 Australian Touring Car Championship
Round 7 - Calder Park, VIC (1/6/1986)

Circuit Length: 2.40 km
Race Distance: 60 laps
Weather: Overcast

First meeting on Calder's new extended layout. Harvey pulled a surprise by putting his Commodore on the front row alongside Fury, and leading the opening laps. Francevic retired early, while the Nissans and Bowe eventually worked their way past Harvey. Seton and Bowe moved past a brake-conserving Fury, before Seton spun out of the lead at the end of the back straight late in the race. Then Bowe led, but just when he looked like he'd avenge his Wanneroo retirement, the Volvo started to cut out with three laps to go, the fuel tank almost dry. He struggled to the finish, but lost second to Seton on the line. Fury scored a lucky win to take full advantage of Francevic's retirement.

Another 1-2 for the Nissans, as tyres on the Commodores of Brock and Crosby wilted with the pace. A blown Volvo engine in qualifying saw Francevic commandeer Bowe's car for the race, finishing a fortunate fourth after just managing to avoid two spinning JPS BMWs in the Karrussel.

Another win goes begging for the driver of Skyline #15, this time Gary Scott. The Queenslander drove a marvellous race, withstanding pressure from Jim Richards to take what would have been his first (and only) ATCC win. Unfortunately, his car was running front brake calipers that weren't homologated; the paperwork had been handed in, but not yet rubber-stamped for use. So Richards was handed his first win for 1985 from Fury, with Francevic behind him in third.

Fury won the race but Francevic won the title, the Kiwi needing only a ninth place finish to take out the championship. A conservative run to sixth sealed the first ATCC win for a turbocharged car.

14/9/1986 - AEC3 - Sandown Park, VIC

Castrol 500
1986 Australian Endurance Championship
Round 3 - Sandown Park, VIC (14/9/1986)

Circuit Length: 3.9 km
Race Distance: 129 laps

The big story is the turmoil in the Volvo camp. Neither the RHD ATCC car nor a brand new one were ready for qualifying. Francevic allegedly made some negative comments about the management of the team which led to his sacking on Saturday evening, leaving the current ATCC champion without a drive.

The huge storm knocked out power to the circuit, leaving timekeeping in disarray. The results were questioned by some entrants, but they eventually stood without protest.

William Dale Jr should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
That's everything I've got for 1986.

Now with regard to championship results... I've yet to fully find out what points scheme was used for the 1983-86 ATCCs. From what I've worked out so far it looks quite convoluted. I don't think what I've worked out is quite right, so if anyone can come forward with more info (say, a description of how points were allocated, perhaps from a race programme or a CAMS manual?) it would be nice

If it helps, I think the AMSCAR Series used the same points structure in 1986.

A few updates on car numbers. This race was once available as a ca. 50 minute VHS (haven't seen a DVD version, though). I'm regarding those not included in the 14 finishers as not classified - either DNFs or not completed a required minimum distance.

I have taken the liberty to copy'n'paste the revised result for future editions. Hope you're alright with that, William.

A general question about Oran Park would be if it was limited to 25 cars? Most grid pictures of 25 car grids ends in the final corner, and the general tight and twisty nature, more than 25 cars would be a bit excessive.
