78-year-old man '70km/h over speed limit'

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574...33-421,00.html

Quote:
A 78-year-old Melbourne man allegedly speeding at 170km/h on a winding road has become the oldest person to have his car impounded under Victoria's hoon laws.
.
.
"The man expressed to us that he believed he was a skilled driver, and that he races cars.
Could this have been Murray Carter?

Australian racings master of time, Murray Carter is 73 today (1931), although thats only what he admits to. And I believe he still holds a licence to race his Nations Cup Corvette.
73 on Jan 30 2004 = 78 on 30 Jan 2009

Haha too funny, I posted the same response at 9am on another forum.

"It's not really funny, but then again.

First thing I thought when I read 78yo and Pulsar was Murray Carter!"

that goes along with one of the funniest comebacks i've heard. silly old **** should know better and being a skilled racing driver should know that public roads are bloody dangerous, you might be skilled and able to handle it but who is to say some other ****wit infront or comming the otherway can.

And privacy laws would prevent them from fessing up who it is.

The Premier has weighed into the argument so no doubt one of the media outlets will interview the suspect for tonights news.

I don't think so! Might have to wait to get him leaving the court.

John Bellfield is the name given on Ch10 News just now.

Was mentioned he, and another person also caught, were competing in a NDSOC "Rally" at the time.

He used to own and operated the Tank Museum in Melbourne's outer east.

Another competitor on the Rally will also be charged for speeding.

Does CAMS have the power to cancel competition licences? If so both of these blokes should be relegated to spectating for awhile.

If NDSOC had a CAMS permit for the event (and if they did it would have strictly been a non-competiton social permit) then yes they can be charged under the NCR's.

I reckon we will see some action from the club before CAMSget involved.

If NDSOC had a AASA permit do they have the power to take any action [sport into disrepute etc.]
The driver in question should have thought about Mike Hawthorn, he was the 1958 world champion and got caught out on a publc road and there was no car coming the other way.
Silly old goat now going on about being a race driver - plays into the hands of the cops.

Turns out the event wasn't CAMS permitted so I guess it's up to the clubs to dish out the punishment (if any)

Should this thread be on the road car forum, it has little to do with Australian & NZ Touring Cars.
