If you go back to the earliest roots of auto-racing you will find hundreds of technical advances prompted by teams trying to get faster, lighter and more fuel efficient. Tyre technology is probably the most significant though.

oops, they are not on engines usually !
Most of the modern electronic engine controls were derived from racing: and used on road engines when pollution control and fuel economy became big issues.

ECU trick gadgets such as ABS and TC
VVT
Anti lag
Nitrous
high compression ratio
balancing
barium oils and lubricants
elctronic ignition
twin spark
trumpets

almost anything you can think of...

paddle shifts first used in a ferrari(roadcar) but also in a normal streetcar alfa romeo 156 selespeed
