Well done to Tony D'Alberto... the lone Holden VY front runner against these ex-works Fords... And to Grant Elliott... who has that old VX up far higher than it has managed before!

Anyone else disappointed with a) the lack of holdens and b) the lack of cars full stop...Is this a result of the increased L1 team involvment with some cars...

Hard to say - Adelaide has profile and is known to wreck cars....maybe its a combination of the two that has kept them away?

I agree...21 cars is pretty ordinary. No HYL, Smiths Trucks, Peter Doulman, Robert Jones, Wayne Wakefield. Maybe the budgets can't stretch enough for the panel damage......

Yes, and yes...

HYL is at home (and perhaps not coming back), the RSR VY probably wont resurface either (a shame, as it was a good car before it was repaired by someone other than PMM)

This weight thing has impacts... and it was done because the main series people seemed scared that the older models could have been as quick as their new beasties...

I bet that the 2006 Carrera Cup cars are nobbled too... for the same reasons

mixxer has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
It would be the budget stopping any team from competing.

CANTO SHOWS CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING FORM

CANTO SHOWS CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING FORM

Dean Canto won the first ever HPDC V8 Supercar Series and returns to the series this year showing the fine form that landed him the Championship title in 2000.

Canto was fastest in both practice sessions of the day and backed up with a fastest qualifying time ahead of Adam Macrow and 2004 Rookie of the Year award winner Warren Luff.

After winning the Championship in 2000, Canto secured a drive with Briggs Motorsport for 2003 in the V8 Supercar Championship Series. He then returned to Team Betta Electrical last year where he partnered Yvan Muller at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000.

He has returned to the HPDC series this year, driving for respected V8 Supercar team Dick Johnson Racing who have successfully entered cars in the ‘feeder category’ for the last two years.

Also showing fine form at the first round of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series for 2005 was Adam Macrow. After impressing endurance drives in the Championship Series over the past five years, Marcrow will complete a full year of V8 Supercar racing with Howard Racing in their Betta Electrical sponsored BA Falcon.

“The last time I drove at this circuit was 1999 so it was good to get back in the seat again,” Marcow said.

“Every time we get the car out onto the circuit it is continuously improving. It was struggling for drive in the first practice session but we worked on balance and made a few minor changes for the qualifying session and it seems to be coming together nicely.”

Macrow has already been announced as a co-driver for the 2005 endurance events with Championship Series’ Team Betta Electrical. Third fastest Luff has also been snatched up quickly for this year’s enduro’s, recently announcing he will be part of leading Ford team Stone Brothers Racing’s assault.

Luff is campaigning Russell Ingall’s BA Falcon which finished last year’s Championship Series in second place and will be under the guidance of Paul Cruickshank in the HPDC V8 Supercar Series this year.

“We had a good test day up at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich last week which has helped a lot for this weekend,” Luff said.

“There were a few teething issues this morning but it is all coming together and with the quality of the field competing this year, it is important to stay up the front which we will be aiming to do for the first race tomorrow and on Saturday morning.”

The day went virtually unscathed for the rookies of the series, except for a major crash midway through the last session when Dick Johnson Racing’s Grant Denyer had a major accident which resulted in his BA Falcon being totally unrepairable and left him rushed to hospital with a suspected fractured wrist and dislocated shoulder.

The first of two HPDC V8 Supercar Series races kicks off at 6.45pm with the final race commencing at 9.55am on Saturday morning.

Can anyone shed any light on the Denyer accident? Does "totally unrepairable" mean the thing is junk or just can't be fixed in time for the races (even assuming Mr Denyer could drive it)?

Car-bender ends Dexion Racing’s weekend

DEXION Racing will not compete in the Holden Performance Driving Centre V8 Supercar Series this weekend in Adelaide after a car-bending accident in the first practice session of the weekend.
Dexion driver Tony Evangelou was slammed in the driver’s side door by Mark Porter after Evangelou was caught in the middle of the Senna Chicane due to an altercation with rookie V8 driver Greg Smith through turns 1 and 2.
Smith was tippy-toeing his way through turn 1 and propped as Evangelou tried to pass him. Evangelou spun and stalled the car initially. He restarted his Falcon and moved forward, only to be nailed hard at the blind chicane by Porter in the B-pillar. The Dexion Ford’s roll cage and B-pillar are compressed in three different areas and the tunnel is creased. The car can not be repaired for this weekend and will trucked back to the team’s home base in Melbourne, where it will be stripped and assessed to see if the cage can be salvaged.
Evangelou was able to drive the car back to pit-lane and walked away with minor leg and side bruising. Impact speed is believed to be at over 100km/h.
The car is new to the Victorian team (ex-Anthony Tratt BA) and has only been used once by Dexion Racing in testing prior to this lap 3 altercation.
The incident has shattered Evangelou and Dexion. The storage manufacturer has over 350 guests visiting the circuit this weekend.
“It’s not the way to start a new season,” he shrugged.
“I think Smith was a bit surprised at how fast I approached him and he baulked. I hit him and spun the car, but it all went down hill from there. I saw Porter coming and I just turned my head the other way. I knew it was going to be a big hit.
“I feel for the Dexion franchise owners and their customers as there will be a lot of them here this weekend and they won’t have a car to cheer for on the track.
“In all our year’s racing cars, we have never walked away from a meeting like this. I’m gutted for the team and Dexion.”
Smith apologised immediately after the session and agreed his inexperience played a part in the initial clash.
“I was going pretty slow through there and he went one way and, unfortunately, I went the same way and we clashed and he spun,” Smith said after the incident.
“To Tony’s credit he understood about the clash.”
Porter’s car sustained enough damaged to be ruled out of qualifying but will be ready for the first race tomorrow. He said he saw the yellow flags but had no where to go.

Grant was on Sunrise this morning, pretty down on himself for the mistake. Showed in car footage of the incodent, just clipped a curb & spun it around into the wall.
Dick stated that at most other tracks, he would have gotten away from it without any damage.
Funny story from Grant "I was in a lot of pain, had my hand on my groin. A nurse came and rubbed my groin for 30 minutes before I told her it was actually my hand that hurt!"

From Crash.Net

Big crash for Sunrise's Denyer

Australian 'Sunrise' weatherman Grant Denyer didn't get his other career as a racing driver for the Summit Fleet Leasing squad in the V8 Develpment Series off to the best of starts as he turned his Ford Falcon into, in his words, mince meat.

Denyer was out on track at Adelaide for the Clipsal 500 event and was in the qualifying session for the V8 Supercar feeder series when he ploughed into a tyre barrier at 140 kph.

The popular weatherman and television presenter was taken to hospital to receive treatment on what was thought to be a broken right wrist and a fractured left shoulder.

"Fortunately the damage was not as bad as first thought," said Grant afterwards. "I've torn ligaments in my right arm and have muscle damage to my left shoulder."

The incident means Denyer's move up to the Development Series after impressing in the Utes over the past few years, has been put back to the second round of the series.
"I won't be driving again this weekend but I'll be right to go again for the second round in seven weeks time," explains Denyer. "With physio, the ligament damage should be healed in six weeks and the shoulder will mend in a fortnight or so.

"Even if I hadn't injured myself I wouldn't be able to drive again this weekend, the car is mince meat. The team wouldn't have been able to repair it for tomorrow's race."

Denyer was starting his second timed qualifying lap when he became airborne as he exited the first chicane.

"The car was in the air after it hit the ripple strip," Denyer said. "The car landed a little sideways and I went off the track; thank god there was a tyre stack waiting for me, or the damage would have been worse.

"I know from looking at the telemetry data that I was doing 148 kays per-hour prior to the accident and 140 (km/s) at the direct point of impact, so it was a big hit.

"The Adelaide street circuit is tough and I was driving the Summit Ford for the first time so I was still learning.

"It's just one of those things that happens and I'll just try to ensure that I don't make the same mistakes again.

"I'm more disappointed for the team and the sponsors that have worked so hard to get me here."

While this was happening Denyer's team mate Dean Canto was putting his Gatorz Ford on pole.

"I'm really happy with the Ford and with the team," said Canto after his qualifying effort.

"I've never achieved a pole position in V8s so it was a good day.

Canto is expecting quite a dual in the race with Warren Luff, who came second and Adam Macrow, third.

"All three of us (Canto, Luff and Macrow) should probably be driving in the V8 Championship so we'll be out there tomorrow to show what we are capable of," Canto said.

"We'll be giving it our all and I'm sure the racing will be entertaining."

Ex-Ingall car, I expected Luff to be right up there..he may have had a problem, as he was the 3rd quickest car in the race....Canto....well surprised is not the word, but he has certainly done well in that DJR car, better than I expected the car to go. However DJR did win here last year, maybe they just have the right setup (you'd think they could do the same with the main cars).
