4. Scott Dixon (Ganassi Chevy), 349

13. Juan Pablo Montoya (Penske Chevy), 299

There's five races left, with the final round counting double.

Hélio, Dixon and Newgarden seem too far from Pagenaud, but anything can happen.

Will we see Pagenaud fade like Montoya last year? I feel like Power has the momentum now.

Would like to see Pagenaud or Newgarden - someone new to shake the championships up a little. Helio would be nice too.

Pagenaud is 32 years old. He raced in Champ Car in 2007 and won the ALMS in 2010. He isn't exactly new.

Newgarden and Rossi are 24-25, great guys and great drivers.

"New" as in "new IndyCar champion". I'm well acquainted with M. Pagenaud from his ALMS days.

On a related note, Gil de Ferran was driving the two-seater in Toronto.

Pagenaud is like Hunter-Reay in 2013. A great driver with no championship or Indy 500 win. Once he won both, he gets recognized. But he's been around for a decade, so he's not "the new face".

After Mid-O, I feel like Dixon must be done (although we've thought that before, haven't we?).

Newgarden still hanging in there in fourth, and let's not forget Helio. I hate the double points for the last race, but it's undeniable that it keeps the championship interesting to the very end.

Standings after Texas:

1. FRA Simon Pagenaud (Penske Chevy), 529
2. AUS Will Power (Penske Chevy), 501
3. BRA Tony Kanaan (Ganassi Chevy), 416
4. BRA Hélio Castroneves (Penske Chevy), 415
5. USA Josef Newgarden (Carpenter Chevy), 406
6. NZL Scott Dixon (Ganassi Chevy), 397

Kanaan and Hélio have very slim chances of catching up. Pagenaud and Power would have to retire at Sonoma.

Has anyone worked out what the various permutations are for Pagenaud and Power to win? I'm rubbish at math.

It's hard to predict accurately since the driver's get a bonus point for pole or leading a lap, and 2 points for leading the most laps. and all this could come down to a point, or a tie breaker like last year.

But....if Will Power gets maximum bonus points and wins the race, Pagenaud can win the championship by finishing 4th. If Will gets maximum bonuses and finishes 2nd, Simon can capture the championship by finishing 9th.

If Power doesn't finish 5th or better, Pagenaud takes it as long as he shows up for the race, so even if Simon drops out in the first lap, Will would still have to finish at least 5th to win the championship. If there turns out to be a tie and Power doesn't win or come 2nd, then Pagenaud gets the championship based on having one more 2nd place finish during the season (both have 4 wins).

Thanks very much for that.

The odds are in Pagenaud's favour but as we saw last year, the outcome can be different.

Penske owned the standings with an 1-2-3, and claimed 10 / 16 wins and 22 / 48 podiums. Montoya was relatively disappointing with an 8th overall finish, with just one win, three podiums and five top 5s.

Newgarden had a great season with Carpenter Racing, finishing 4th with a win, four podiums and six top 5s. Pigot claimed two top 10s in ten races as rookie. Carpenter was terrible, with and 18th as best result. Hildebrand finished 6th at Indianapolis, showing that he's still fit despite his little track time.

Rahal continued doing well with a 5th overall finish, earning a win, four podiums and eight top 5s. He would have beaten Newgarden except for his poor results at the Indy 500 qualifying and race.

Dixon finished 6th in the standings, which is not bad in itself, but his worst since 2005. He got two wins and four podiums, but also four DNFs. Kanaan was 7th, similar to his previous seasons, with two podiums and five top 5s.

Kimball was 9th in the standings, with 5th place finishes at both Indy races as best results and just five races outside the top 10. Chilton was extremely disappointing with Ganassi, with a 7th, a 10th and a 13th finish as best results. Even Daly was considerably better with Coyne Honda.

Honda had a poor season, but I think that the engine and bodykit aren't the only reason.

Andretti was the best Honda team, and Alexander Rossi won the Indianapolis 500. He also got a 5th and a 6th, but just six top 10 finishes, ending 11th.

Instead, Carlos Muñoz beat him for 10th place in points, collecting a 2nd place at the Indy 500, a 3rd, a 6th and seven top 10s.

Hunter-Reay got three 3rd finishes, two 4ths and eight top 10s. However, he got tangled at the Indy 500, which cost him a higher place in the standings.'

Marco had never had an IndyCar season with no podiums, but this year he finished no better than 8th and was 16th in the standings.

After a dramatic crash in the 2015 Indy 500, Hinchcliffe returned with a pole at the rectangular oval, and claimed three podiums and eight top 10s. However, he also had several poor performances, and finished 13th in the standings. Schmidt teammate Aleshin finished second at Pocono, and got two 5ths and a 6th, but no other top 10s.

Bourdais was the worst Chevy driver, finishing 14th i the standings. He got a win, two 5ths and eleven top 10s. It's not too bad, but the four time Champ Car deserves better. Let's see if Dale Coyne lets him shine bright again.

Daly finished 18th, which doesn't sound great. But he got a 2nd place, a 4th and three 6ths, which is good enough for a rookie driver at Coyne Honda. If he stays, Bourdais could help him improve.

Sato claimed a 5th, two 6ths and five top 10s. Also, had had just three DNFs at the big ovals, and none at road / street courses. With his long rap sheet, nobody would expect more, but technically he didn't disappoint either.

It's hard to describe Hawksworth's season in words. In his third IndyCar season, he got no top 10s, and just four top 15s. Even RC Enerson, who is 19 years old and has just one Indy Lights win, got a 9th finish with a Coyne Honda.
