very true, i suppose, but it all depends how much i can afford, i dont think id go for 200mm, id like more length unfortunatly
The 100-300 i will probably go for if you guys think its "satisfactory" then in the future i plan to save up for a 500mm lens anyway |

Andrew,
Remember that 200mm on the 20D actually = 320mm. I will have to see how I go - but I think I will want more length - I am going to get a 1.4x TC for my 70-200 2.8 - it'll reduce the aperture down to f4 - but that'll be ok... Have you thought of the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and a teleconvertor? That would bring you to 448mm. Just some ideas... James |

Remember youv'e got a good resolution camera there, so you can crop a bit. The only thing I'm thinking of is you won't have a range between 55-100mm if you go for a 100-300 with the lens you have, whether you think that is a problem or not I don't know. |

lenses
Went digital last year. Canon EOS 1D Mark II and 10D. I bought 3 lenses...70-200 f2.8, 300 f4, and 400 f5.6. In shooting pics at Indy for USGP, Mid Ohio, and Spa...I'd say that about 80% of pics was with the 400 or the 400 and 1.4X teleconverter combo. Rarely used the 300 f4 at all, and really only used the 70-200 at Spa when I was at Bruxells corner and taking Podium pics at USGP. In planning for San Marino GP this april, I will not be taking the 300 f4.

I have just been looking through e-bay and I noticed that someone is selling the fixed 500mm lens, which retails at just over £5000, the current bid is £250, with a day to go. Someone is going to get a bargin with that one.
I was also in one my local camara shops yesterday and they had EF 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 L IS USM on display now that is very nice lens, one day when I am rich I will have one of those. |

On all accounts the 28-300 is meant to be a bit soft - a bit of a jack of all trades... more of a paparazzi lens...
It does seem attractive though - no lens swapping in dusty environments... |

If it's genuine, the price will rocket towards the end of auction. If it's not, most will stay away and one poor bugger that thinks he's getting a bargain will end up getting scammed... Seems to be the way with ebay. |

The fact the seller says he is "not too well informed about this type of lens" should be ringing alarm bells. It's not the sort of thing you pick up if you know nothing about photography.

Just when you thought this thread was going away, I've got a question!
After becoming a tad brassed off trying to manover my Sigma 50-500mm lens in an elbow to elbow crowd and often nearly tripping over the seats behind me, I'm seriously considering buying a smaller lens to ease the the problem in this situation. Sadly this time I will not have an astrominacal budget to blow, unless I strike it lucky on the lotto (and in which case I'd be bribing Ecclestone). I think my budget can stretch no further than £200 this time, and probably more like £150. (waits arrival for cheque in the post of half of valencia trip owed to me) I've found a Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III - USM on 7dayshop.com for £119. http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/prod...ducts_id=98415 My question is, is it worth getting this? It's sussposed to be good for sports. But I'm thinking a board of experienced and talented will be able to give me a much better opinion than a pr biased webpage trying to sell me the damn thing. Any views, warmly appreciated, thanks. Last edited by James North; 4 Feb 2005 at 09:42. Reason: need to add a link |

Looks OK, why don't you go for a 200mm one though? I find that suitable for quite a lot of closer stuff, and easier to handle.

Right, I've finally decided that I'm going for this lense
http://www.jessops.com/search/viewpr...=CANEF702004LU which is a EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM LENS altho the EF 200mm f/2.8L USM MK2 is only £6 more. |

Anyone thought of hireing your lenses? Simply too expensive for me to go for the 400/2.8's but with roughly 50 euro's a day including insurance it is the only option for me.
