Bryan Miller should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Brabham BT30

This is a major post for me in regard to these cars ,and a lot of assistance is due to Chris Townsend.
I will have made some mistakes , but initially will post obscure cars in order to see if we can eliminate strange entities out in to correct spec.
The major problem with these cars is it took very little for the same car to be reported as anything between a BT28 and or BT36 or anything inbetween.
For the people that may not be aware , the FIA rules in regard to cockpit widths altered and BT28-29 and 30 were not considered wide enought for save emergency exit , therefor the BT35 and BT36 had altered body panels to comply.
Naturally cars were altered to comply and a ''say '' BT30 then was reported as a BT36 in some instances. This has greatly complicated tracking of the cars.

The first cars are to seek assistance and to advise.

BT30x as a hillclimb car in 1969 at least by 23-5-69 , for Mike McDowell and shared with Rob Jennings , fitted with a Climax FWMV 2.0 V8 , always entered as seperate entity , but the same car.
This car is BT30x-1 , and is a combination of McDowells engine and Jennings chassis, car is used in this form all through 1970 and A/S reports 18-2-1971 p.25 as now being fitted with a 3.5 Litre Buick , work being carried out by Roy Lane.
Car then adv. sale 10-6-71 p.75,
Sold to David Fyfe and confirmed as BT30X-1 .
For sale again A/S 7-12-72. No further known.

Roger Hickman is out in the hills early 1969 in a 1.6 FVA engined BT30 at Loton Park.
This car changes hands to Brian Pickering and is at Barbon Manor in 1970 as a BT30 fitted with a 1.5 Lotus Twin-cam.
In 1971 this car is now shared with Nigel Woodise A/S 18-2-1971 p.25 still fitted with 1.5 Twin-cam [for class wins].
No number known by me, Chris suggests could be BT30-2 ?????

The next is what started as a BT29 FB with a Cosworth FVC , and entered by Tony Griffiths , this entity is reported as written off at Silverstone and is then replaced by a BT30 , which A/S reports as built April 1970.
Did the chassis plate get transferred and only a new chassis , BT30 , or a whole new car or what.???????????

The next is an adv. 10-2-1972 p.54 for a BT28/30 for sale as an F3 with genuine Bt30 chassis.

BT30-1 1969 Kurt Ahrens as F2 .
1970 Werner Lindeman as F2 at C/Palace 24-5-1970

Car written off , destroyed by fire in the report for Hockenheim F2 round 14-6-1970

BT30-2, reported as Peter Westbury's car at Zolder 13-6-1969 p.8 . somehow I think this is a reporting error.

BT30-3, First /Westbury at Zolder 13-6-1969 p.8 .
Major damage , to be rebuilt for the next round of the F2 series.
At Le Castellet 26-7-1970 , now with John Wingfield .
In 1971 still with Wingfield at Hockenheim 8-4-1971 p.10
For sale A/S 1-7-1971 p.60
To Jim Charnock prior August 1971 used at Oulton Park 7-10-1971.
The following is not verified .
To Christopher Mann U.K. 1983
To Ray Delaney , Australia [ verified ] 1983-88.
To Art Valdez U.S.A. 1990-1 circa.
Nothing Further.

BT30-4 , for Malcolm Guthrie , new at Zolder 13-6-1969 p.8
Frank Williams as entrant some or all of the time in1969.
By 1970 for Ecurie Ecosse for Graham Birrell at N'bring 3-5- 1970.
Thence to Jolly Club /Gagliardi, non C/ship rd. at Monza , 21-7-1970, then Salzburg F2 30-8-1970.
Then Scuderia Ala d'oro for Gian-Luigi Picchi at Hockenheim 4-4-1971.
then reported to be shared by Salvati and Picchi in 1971 , and stated to be the car used by Silvio Moser at Bogota in 1971.
Carlo Franchi for 'Gimax' at Monza 20-6-1971.
Nothing further.

BT30-5.
Frank Williams , new for Piers Courage Zolder 13-6-1969 p.8
To Albert Poon and used at Macau 16-11-1969 , report 27-11-1969 p.14 , retained into 1970 and used at Macau again A/S 3-12-1970 p.4 .
Nothing further.

Bt30-6 . Irish Racing Cars / Alan Rollison 1969,
to Bogota Sth.America F2 series , reported as very little used , in fact an uprated 1969 car.
Poss. for sale Bob Howlings Racing Cars 17-2-1972 p.42 as EX. Rollinson , winner at Bogota , also rear cover Autosport 2-3-1972 .
To Nelson Todd Ireland 1971 .
To Ken Walker/ Peter Kaye U.K. 1972 [ David McKinney]
To Bob Howlings again.????
To John Bradburn.
To James Wallis 1982-3 usedin the H.S.C.C championship.
To Bob Howlings 1985
To Tony Thompson 1986.
To Chris Farrell [Australia] retained 2003.

That's all for now .

Any fixes needed.

Bryan.

Bryan, these are a bit before my time, but I do recall Phil Guerola in a lovely 'clean' BT30 (or described as such) in UK Libre from 75-76 -ish. I think it had an 1800 cc engine, wnet pretty well too at that level.

Guerola raced BT30-11, the car that Tony Dean raced briefly in 1972( I think/hope!) Saw him beat Bev Bond's B18 in a brilliant libre race at Mallory in November 1972.

As always, hope this helps rather than hinders

BT30X/1
David Fyfe and Alex Brown 1972
Murray McGrath 1973
Peter Coleman (still with Rover V8) in HSCC events 1989

Hickman car
I have Pickering and Woodisse sharing this in 1970 as well as 1971
My notes say “BT30/3?” (ie with a question-mark)

BT30/2 and 3
I have the lower number for the Westbury/Wingfield/Charnock car. Perhaps Westbury had both cars, and the other was the Pickering/Hickman job?
Dick James was advertising “ex-Westbury BT30/3” in California 1992/3

BT30/4
I have the number of Birrell’s EE car as 14 - I wonder of your 4 for him is a misprint?

BT30/5
Poon was still campaigning a BT30 in 1971 and 1972 (sometimes with Kevin Bartlett as driver) - presumably this one

BT30/6
James Wallis was running this car in 1984 and 1985 - don’t know about earlier

BT30/11
Watson 1970 and 1971 and into 1972. Howlings then Dean in ‘72 clubbies, then Guerola. I suspect David Force might be able to throw light on this car’s present whereabouts

David.

Thank you .
BT30X-1 , noted.
BT30-2 , will allocate to Hickman/Pickering/ Woodise at the moment.
BT30-3. with Dick James /California 1992-3. Believe this will be the car ex. Australia/Ray Delaney, and I have CAMS application for this and car is called out as BT30-3, so will leave as that for the moment.
Strange that Westbury is connected with both BT30-2 and BT30-3 and also had a car that needed a rebuild after 1st. outing, scope for confusion / chassis plate swapping , whatever . More work needed .
BT30-4 , yes noted that the E.E use does not gell , and Ecurie Ecosse usual car is BT30-14.

Bryan

I too think that 30-4 is a misprint as far as Ec.Ecosse use is concerned.

BT30-15 some clarification is at hand. The Salisbury BT35 is a different car. Salisbury races the BT30 at the Boxing Day '71 meeting at Brands. I think that this is the car that goes to Martin Webb. The BT35 is retained by Gerard until '73 then Harry Gilbert. 1975 John Wingfield, 1976 John Thistlethwaite for Tim Wood

Have one problem BT30. Tony Griffiths is hillclimbing one in 1970 which is maybe 30-2. [The McDowell -Jennings car is BT30X-1 the 4wd car] This car passes via Spencer Elton to Woodise.

Some updating etc:

BT30/15
I too have this going to Martin Webb
Present owner: Bob Salisbury (GB)

BT30/20
Michael Baudoin, France, about ten years ago

BT30/24
Gérard Gamand, France, about ten years ago

BT30/25
apparently dismantled in 1970s by the then German owner. Offered at auction by Coys at Essen 2002

BT30/26
Present owner: Julian Majzub (GB)

I have the Griffiths hillclimb “BT30Y” going to Spencer Elton 1971-72, then David Render 1973-74

The ex-Gerard/Salisbury BT35 was regularly raced by Nick Overall in HSCC events late ‘80s/early ‘90s

Chris/David.

Many thanks , I managed to totally disregard my own notes , as I also had Griffiths car to Spencer Elton A/S 18-2-1971 P.4 and reported as fitting BDA , advert says car built April 1970.

Will do an update , where are we list in due course.
Is it to much to believe that David McKinney's report of BT30-15 as now with Bob Salisbury, is this perhaps the same Robert[Bob] Salisbury ex. Gerrard.????

Had only last night after posting , decided that the Salisbury BT30 and BT35 would be two seperate entities, purely down to the wording of one adv. in period, which I revisited. So I will seperate the BT35 out .

Thank You Bryan.

One and the same, I believe.
Though, as you can probably tell by the fact that my records tend to peter out about ten years ago, I am not as close to this particular racing scene as I used to was

I owned BT35X-2 after my BT30. It ended up with a BDA engine and was used by Shaun Mooney in Euro F2. Tony Griffiths I beleive ordrered and received a BT30 but as it was to be used on the "hills" it was designated an "X" No by Brabhams. I also owned the BT30X It was basically a modified BT23 fitted with 23 Bodywork to take the 2 Litre V8 Climax. It was later fitted with a Buick and even later was "cloned" into 2 Cars.

Before I venture to BT36 territory , sorry Andrew , I needed to advise a few things.

The Mike Lawrence book , of which Ron T. was quite complimentary about to me at Eastern Creek a few weeks ago has production lists , I also have , which Mike probably used , thought Ron T. 3 very large sheets apparently commisioned by Bernie E. some time after he purchased Brabhams, and these sheets , painstakingly done in hand , give details in regard to model number , production volume , tracks , wheelbases , fuel tankage ,etc.etc.
Mostly appears the same in the Lawrence book.

If we take the production figures for the cars we are discussing , we get .

BT30 ,1969 , F2 , 26 off , which seems correct as we have numbers 1-12 and 14-27 , gives 26 off .
BT30X , 1969 .H.C. 2 off , but fuel tanks are listed as 20 galls. Both cars with Cosworth FVC according to sheets.

Bryan.

OK Bryan, back to the cart horse thing again. YeHa.

BT30-15 now with Richard Kendle UK(thanks James) and BT30-3 now with Mike Caromdy East Coast USA(thanks Ian).

That now gives 18 of the 26 BT30s reasonably well accounted for (if you accept the trashed ones have not done a Lazarus). And that in just 3 days. Recent race results suggest that there are a couple more in the States, same again in Europe and at least one in Japan. What may be more difficult is the 'who did what' bit given that BT30 drivers seem to have been very promiscous in 1970.
All very worthwhile & rewarding stuff, Andrew

David McKinney thinks I should know so...BT30 number 11 has now been added to David Brown's Brabham stable and BT 30 number 15 has been restored by its original drver Bob Salisbury this year and is owned by Richard Kendle.

David.

As always , thank you.

I would like to see the trail of the French ex. Auto. Club Argentina car, BT36-6/-7.
In Australia , if the car was ex. Argentina , and ex. the museum , we would be requiring Bill of Sale at the very least.
Looks like we will have to keep an eye on that one.

I will get back to you re. BT36-1 's adverts. as I just went to check A/S and the Tate adv. is there , but not the Wayne , so I made a typo. re. date and need to check.

To anybody following this thread , I just loved the F1R REASON why a certain driver did not appear in his BT35 BDA at the Nurburgring round of the F2 C/ship 29-4-1973.
Entrant R. James .. Drv. Roy James , DNS. driver in prison.

More updates.

In the Singapore G.P. report 26-4-1973 , Kiyoshi Misaki is reported in the ex. Kazato BT30 , fitted with a Toyota Celica T/C motor.
Misaki we already knew about , however this is the first ref. to Kazato.
Misaki still has a/some cars into 1977, but by then being called as BT36, or he has sold BT30 and purchased BT36.

Confirmed that at the virtually same time as Martin Webb in his ex. Gerrard BT30 FVA at S/stone sprints , 2-11-1972 , Robert Salisbury is offering for sale the BT35. A/S 23-11-1972.
