MSA licence renewal
I need to renew my Race B licence (apparently!). I'm 24 and got the licence this year, so odn't think I need another medical. Is it just a case of filling in a form? I've had a look on the MSA website but all I aw was the 2006 application form.
Am I missing something? Cheers, Paul |

Normally you will get the renewal pack in the post before the end of the year. Patience!
 It was just filling in the form and include payment. IIRC They suggest you have another medical, but you don't need to). If you were upgrading you would need to send your old licence with signatures. However I saw in Motorsport Now that there is a new style licence; so now you have to send a passport photo. In addition we should be able to do it all on line (for most licences and as long as nothing changes and there is no medical). We shall see, as you say the website does not have this yet. The website has been slowly improving over the years. This sounds like another step forward. Do you have any planned meetings early in the year? |

The renewal forms started to go out this week.
Mine arrived on Monday. As said above you do not need another medical, just fill in the form stick a passport size photo in the appropriate space. 2007 licences will be issued in the first week of December when the new Blue Book is available. |

Tell me this, I had a medical in what April this year and submitted the forms to the MSA, if I was to apply for a new licence for 2997 as soon as the form arrives why do I need to have another medical when less than a year has transpired since the last one? My greedy bloody doctor because I am in a snooty area (Bushey) likes to capitise on the fact and ripped me off £85 last time which I can do without.

If you survive for the 2997 season Al, I don't think you'll need a medical - your body will already have been well examined by doctors and scientists

my licence renewal also arrived this week. It has an insert in large text reminding us that online renewal is now available.
Q - how do you send in a passport photo with the online option? Q2 - where is the 2007 renewal option on the website?

My "you need a medical" birthday is January 1st, wonder if I bang the application in now I can avoid a medical ;-)
Mind you, in the same post as MSA licence came my HGV licence renewal and I need a medical for that, so perhaps I'll get a BOGOF. (he says, leaving the door open for abuse......) |

I'm sure a friend of mine has done the same thing re medical and got away with it ok.
You had a medical less than a year ago, so you may be ok. The 1st Jan medical is a bit close though, seeing as the licence is valid from 1st Jan 2007...! |

As a 'greedy bloody doctor' and fellow racer I don't think £85 is too much for a medical...I wouldn't would I? It takes about an hour to do the examination and fill in the forms. I don't know what you do for a living Al but the rate seems OK to me.
Interestingly I have offered to do Medicals and Stress ECGs for racers who need the ECG (Int C or above). I have organised a local private hospital to lend me a room, a technician, the 'human rolling road' and the ECG equipment for a couple of afternoons. They normally charge £250 a go for these tests. My cardiology colleagues charge much the same to supervise (ie resuscitate you if you have a cardiac arrest during the test) and report the electrocardiogram. I have offered to do this for £135 all-in with all the cash going to charity. Seems like a bargain to me but obviously not as so far only two people have shown any interest. Perhaps it is because I don't live in a snooty area...... |

15 minutes tops and using National Health facilitys and time so yes I stand by my statement. I also understand a lot of doctors now are using Google for diagnosis, I can do that too:-) Sorry Facemob its damned right extorsion end of story.

These medicals are not done under the NHS, it is all private work, even though it may be an NHS doctor.

Sad how little Al seems to know about how General Practice is run...Medicals are private work (we could hardly expect the NHS to pay for hobby mediacals could we?). Most GP's surgeries belong to the GPs not the NHS so the facilities are actually owned by the doctors (who,incidentally, usually have eye-watering mortgages on them) and GPs are not paid by the hour by the health service, they are self employed.
As a hospital doctor I have to go to my GP for a medical just like everyone else, my current GP races a very quick Lancia Stratos Rep in SRGT, strangely enough he doesn't charge me. Many years ago the first GP I went for the examination was telling me that he thought motorsport was dangerous, on the wall was a photograph of him hanging from some rope from a cliff...Now that is what I call dangerous. Facemob, don't worry about all those years and expense of medical school I'm sure your daughter will make it all up when she gets to cash in on the race driver medical market, I reckon she could be onto a fortune! |

My tame doctor does the medical for£ 35,and he doesnt live up near the end of the country!Its not a closed for friends practice either.

I suppose it's like the old story of charging 50 quid to repair a TV by hitting it with a hammer. It's only £5 for the hit, it's £45 for knowing where to hit it....
Doctors, accountants, architects, they're all the same sort of price. Al, if only we'd listened in class we could be charging that sort of money :-( |

I spent 45 in my local GPs last January getting my medical. However nearly 30 minutes of that was in the waiting room. I'd hate to have thought how long I'd have had to wait if my appointment wasn't at 9am and other appointments could have over-run. I spent longer having my eyes checked last month than I did actually having the race medical. And there I was only charged £20 rather than £50 at the GPs. I'm glad i don't have to do it every year.

I have had my medical today for my first application, I was in there for about 40 mins and he went through everything (including stuff that wasnt on the form). Now all I have to do is find somewere to do my ARDS (any ideas welcomed).

My heart bleeds for you doctors it really does, now we have people quoting £35 or £50 Ok fair enough even £50 but bloody £85 and as it seems to go up a tenner a year it will probably be £95 next time and I swear I will be in there 15 minutes max, rip off.
