Meetings

Now, I'll admit to not liking F3 or BTCC or GT's per se. Likewise I'm not going to troll down to Thruxton to watch truck racing. But............................ If a few peeps from 10/10s said they'd like to meet up at any circuit irrespective of the meeting, I'd make an effort. (Like everybody it depends on geography).

So the point is. Do you just go to a meeting because it majors on your preference, or do you go to meet other enthusiasts and see your favourite cars?

Well I've only been to a handful of meetings this year but I used to go for a mix of both really. Started out with the former and then ended up watching some right old toot due to the latter Even saw some Capris once...

Highlight of my season is getting all the calendars at the start of the year and planning my way through the season: which meetings I will cover for the mags, which I will cover for the website, which I will just go to watch.

My main rules: to be at Mallory as much as possible; to see as much FF1600 as possible; and next season, to be at as much 750MC as possible. And whichever one I am at I will meet many friends, a lot of whom are TT members.

I marshal at meetings at Mallory and Donington (and Curborough) which are organised by BARC and 750 MC. BARC meetings because I am on the regional committee and 750 because I love their meetings.

I'll watch anything, BTCC and the like is good fun to me, don't take it too seriously. I get the Autosport guide at the start of the year, usually plan stuff that my mate is going to as he lives quite a way from me, so it's the best time to see him. But whatever is on, particularly at Snet and Brands as they are closest I'll try and get to.

I also marshal, so I go to midlands circuits and hill climbs, because of travelling time. The way I choose events is if a meeting is on at circuit close to me and it is not term time, then I will more then likely go.

I marshal all I can at silverstone, not because its close to me (about 95miles!) but because I enjoy it there and also the people are great!

Other meetings because I fancy going usually!

I saw Truck Racing at Thruxton this year for the first time ever (other than on TV) when it was on the same bill as the Ginettas. It was very entertaining, and you felt the drivers realised they were there to put on a show rather than potter around for their own amusement. I shall be looking out for them in 2005.

I've raced on the same bill as the trucks and they don't half leave a lot of oil on the circuit. When it rains its like driving on ice!

From the looks of it, most of the oil comes unburnt straight out of the exhaust pipes.
