Overtaking

There has been lot of discussion on these forums about overtaking but I haven't seen any comments about the overtaking that Mark Webber executed during the Italian GP, all were clean and presented no risk to himself or the other driver. A pity a few other drivers don't seem to have the same ability [ no names but a few spring to mind ]. There are a few people here that post comments on Webber's driving ability but he clearly showed his ability to overtake and to do it safely and the silence has been golden.

He was bound to get it right eventually!

He had a good race and there were some good moves. However, I'm not marking him down as a great overtaker just yet.

I think he should have got on with it earlier, instead of sitting back behind Hulkenburg whinging on the radio.
As soon as they told him to get on with it he got past pretty damn quickly.
His destiny is in his own hands, for him to say they underperformed as a team is a little harsh on the team. He was the one with the steering wheel in his hands.
God saying that hurts as a Webber supporter

Well, as they say, the truth might hurt at times.

But thinking back Webber has had some shockers, but Malaysia last year and again China with Button were good races for Webber. His move on Button again in Canada this year was good.

I think as a rule Webber's overtaking is fine. He does have the occassional brain explosion like OZ GP this year and European GP this year with Heiki. But generally his overtaking is clean....i can see why people regard his defence of corners a bit too hard but his passing is fine

They were decent moves, but nothing in the vein of a Montoya dive from 3 car lengths back a la Brazil 2001.

It's about time one of the RBR drivers did some clean overtaking, so forgive us all for not getting too excited when it eventually did happen.

He made a few good passes. Nothing to justify a thread dedicated to it.

Agreed. He had one of the best cars out there and only passed people with inferior equipment... and even moaned about getting by some of them.

Interesting you also noticed that pre Monza both the Red Bull pilots haven't been noted for their overtaking, yet since the new front wing load test was enforced at Monza (which the Red Bulls initially failed before they made it stiffer to pass on the re-test) what Im saying is... I have a hunch that the older more flexable front wing despite its obvious rewards in clean air, had a major downside in dirty air, a double edged sword?

Linked from Sodemos thread- Have a look at the amount of wing flex that occured to Vetels RB6 as he crossed Buttons slipstream before losing control on the brakes. I can imagine overtaking would become much more difficult when you have a front wing that behaves like this in dirty air.

Maybe the reason.. What do you think?

I think it's a reasonable suggestion. Webber and Vettel have never been renowned over-takers but they've both been particularly lacking in that department this season. I guess we'll have to see how they get on in Singapore.
