And clearly not a generalisation...they're all DTM drivers, and the DTM/F1 link is pretty strong going each way.

Although I can think of a couple of drivers of S2000/Super Touring cars that have 'driven' F1 cars...they're usually occassional drives or test drives that went nowhere. The other way doesn't work well either...

Excellent tourers...naff F1'ers:
Gabriele Tarquini (Tyrrell 1995, AGS 1991)
Nicola Larini (Ferrari 1994, Sauber 1997)
Jo Winkelhock (drove for someone in the early 80's)
Jorg Muller (Sauber test driver, 1998-1999)
Kelvin Burt (Ligier test driver 1996)

Some of F1 drivers that were naff tourers:
Jean-Christophe Boullion (Renault 1999)
Nigel Mansell (previously mentioned, Ford 1998)
Derek Warwick (Vauxhall, 1997-8...at least he owned it)

Derek did taste victory in a touring car.

And Larini was hardly a "naff" F1'er - he's been on the podium

In Warwick's defence the 1995 Alfa was not a patch on the 1994 car (even Tarquini struggled to do much with it) and the 1997/98 Vectra was an absolute dog. That's not to say I would rate him as a particularly good TC driver.

Larini aside the first list is test drives or tail-end charlie teams so not surprising they failed to impress. Could anyone fail to be 'naff' in a Ligier or AGS?

Larini had good potential in F1, his podium at San Marino was easily forgotten though.

But his 1997 stint at Sauber qualifies as naff IMHO

Going way off topic now, but Ligier did win a race that season

AGS, okay - suppose. Probably more an indicator though that that was all that would hire him.

Or given the way most bottom-end F1 teams work, an indication that that was all his sponsorship dollar would buy him.
