Dan Rear should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Auger car was built on a T492 according to Mawp in about 1980. Beetle NOT broken up, I saw it 3 weeks ago!

Did Tony Dickinson have the original Skoda, the 73-74 Chas Beattie/Chris Meek car, at one point, rings a bell? None of them tho' were as quick as Derek Walker's 'home-made' LB14 car. Fastest 2-litre I ever saw.

i wonder if teh Auger skoda went to TD
his T290 based car was the car that Dorset racing had at LM in 77? entered under Cloud engineering
TD bought the complete team 1 car spares extra chassis and had Pilbeam narrow the tub fitted rollcage skoda body built it up from the spares
the complete Gp 6 car sat for 25 yrs in the barn as it last raced at LM until they restored it to race again in CER

the skoda tub sits a yard as tub rollcage!
VW Beetle i was told was dismantled as the corners where F5000 and of use to some car owner

What was the Derek Walker skoda based on?

Agree with Chunterer; this is now much more about the history than what these cars are doing now! Moved!

It wasn't "based" on anything it was scratch built. It had a spaceframe chassis with Derek's own suspension designs. He did all the fabrication himself.

Derek would often cannibalise his cars and use them as a parts bin for his next project.

The Ladybird Escort

As requested by a certain Mr Driftwood there are a couple of photos of the Derek Walker Escort taken at Oulton Park in 1977

Enjoy!

The grass in the foreground never really had a chance! When they put in the crazy club link from Cascades to just before Knickerbrook they seeded the outside of the right hander but it never really got what you could call lush due to being cut up all the time!

Correct. Derek only built spaceframe cars as he thought that was the simplest way to go about it.

Errm, no idea to be honest?!!

The interesting thing to me there is would the GA engine that Bernie put into Jeff's M1 be the one Bernie ran in his Capri and therefore 'The Brode' previously?

Well going slightly OT for a moment as my old man used to say when I was in school (I drove him to distraction):

"If you 'flipping well' spent half as much time with your head in your school books as you do in your 'flipping racing mags', you'd get far better results.'

I dunno Shrew, the imagination and capacity to absorb info about car racing just happened when I were a lad.

When I was little I would pore over the programmes, the mind would conjure up images of some old thing trundling round, then when I actually saw the cars with my own eyes I was quite often gobsmacked by what I saw and the noise they made!!

The Ginger Marshall Relliant Kitten is probably the greatest example of that. I was mouth open when I saw it for the first time at Thruxton in 1984 hurtling up Woodham Hill towards the chicane. I couldn't believe that that noise and that speed came from that car. Fabulous!

I've always been into saloon car racing (as well as certain single seater categories), regardless of how 'saloon' the cars actually were so to speak!!!

A lot of things on here develop from speculation (or educated guesses) and then people come on and either confirm or dispel.

Take the Rover thread, like this one, a member started off enthusiastically listing cars he remembered and eventually even the previous owners or people involved in building them came on.

It's absolutely brilliant on here!!! So many enthusiasts whether they have been hands on or not make it such a great forum.

The Jeff Wilson M1 was based on the ex-Purley Chevron B30 GA F5000 car. I always assumed the GA came with the car?

Im kinda in the same boat as you when you saw the Kitten.

I used to go to every meeting at Outon from a very young age during the 80's. Actually the first racing car i can remember was some sort of sports saloon ( I think ) The car was painted black and white like a Zebra which is probably why i remember it. I seem to recall seeing it race a fair few times at Oulton. I no this is not a lot of info but its all i can remember. Can anyone tell me who and what this car was ?

I used to drive my Dad crazy every time we went to Oulton 'is the Zebra car racing today' then after every race 'is it on now' etc and i used to wave at the car every time it went past

The BMW M1 car was the chevron B30 ex purley f5000 car he bought from the channel islands it was with the GA
later sold to the McPherson brother sister racers

bernie had his GA in the capri saw the car at circuits in the 80`s but never saw it run!
then GA went into a 1985 lola f3000 car he had for BOSS in the late 90`s

Derek Walker , Special Saloons , and Oulton Park .

Before he did Special Saloons , I believe that Derek raced a home-built Clubmans car ( or series of cars? ) called a Ladybird . Story is that he is about to reappear in one of these !

I can remember the Escort , which I think was powered by an 1850 cc BDE ; by the way the only size for a genuine BDE ! He once wrapped it up in practice at Oulton Park , and repaired it for the race using tubing 'borrowed' from various parts of the infrastructure at Oulton Park . Later on , he built a Skoda with , I think , the same engine . His Chief Mechanic at that time was his teenage daughter , Eliz(s?)abeth .

He raced principally at Oulton , but was a leading light in the Aintree Racing Club , and could also be seen at Donnington and Mallory . IMHO , a far better driver than some of those who raced similar cars , but had much better funding .

Just as an afterthought on the subject of Derek Walker ; did he not also at one time run a Fiat 850 Coupe ?

Not , I think , the Norman Lackford car , either ; to me , Norman epitomised the very spirit of club motorsport , and deserves to be the subject of a separate string all of his own . Any takers ?

Clive
