He once wrapped it up in practice at Oulton Park , and repaired it for the race using tubing 'borrowed' from various parts of the infrastructure at Oulton Park . Later on , he built a Skoda with , I think , the same engine . His Chief Mechanic at that time was his teenage daughter , Eliz(s?)abeth .

He raced principally at Oulton , but was a leading light in the Aintree Racing Club , and could also be seen at Donnington and Mallory . IMHO , a far better driver than some of those who raced similar cars , but had much better funding .

Just as an afterthought on the subject of Derek Walker ; did he not also at one time run a Fiat 850 Coupe ?

Not , I think , the Norman Lackford car , either ; to me , Norman epitomised the very spirit of club motorsport , and deserves to be the subject of a separate string all of his own . Any takers ?

Clive
Derek has been racing one of the three Ladybirds that are in the States for some years now.

Derek did build & race a Fiat 850 Coupe special saloon and it was also a spaceframe.

Pleasure. I'll have to see if I have any of it on track - most of my 'snaps' are on colour slide and have yet to be scanned.

Thats the fella. That car seemed to get better and better results every time i saw it race at Oulton. Does the car still race ? I dont think Racetec is there any more maybe they moved to a different location or something ? ( Well the sign is no longer on the wall )

driftwood has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
On Derek Walkers mechanic
i can recall being at George Bevans when the Thruxton Special saloon car race was televised and Derek had a 30 sec slot on TV when the car was in the pits
George ( who was deaf by then) saw a teenage/cum 20 yr old girl running around the car and said " last time i saw her she was a little girl look at her now- she is Dereks only helper!! "

was the Lackford Fiat the Walker car?
Norman retired 10 years ago & went to live down west country way im sure he took the Fiat with him

One of Suggy's Skodas - the first one ? This car had a twin , which his then-sponsor Jim Price drove , mainly in GT races at Donnington .

Incidentally , did Jim Price not at one stage have the ex-Colin Hawker DFVW , before it got passed on to Walter Robertson ?

I think the Jim price Skoda was the ex- Norman Hodgson, ex- Jim Evans car which Jim Evans built around the Chevron.

That picture of Suggy's Skoda must have been taken at a biggish meeting as its next to one of Pete Hall's vans. (Possibly a BTCC meet ?) But what year ?

Not neccessarily a big meet, Gordon. Pete Hall was in Prodsaloons for a good while in the late 70s/early 80s, so would have raced at the same meetings as the GTs/Spec Saloons a lot. And definitely would have taken 'second billing' to the latter!

Price with the DFVW doesn't rings bells with me either.

Would think it was very late 70s or early 80s. I think Jim price's involvement ceased around then.

I don't know if Tony Sugden posts on here but he or Big Andy may be able to date it better.

May I ask you super saloon experts a question?

I'm trying to trace a F5000 Chevron B28 and one clue is that it was advertised alongside Super Saloons. I'm hoping that somebody may be able to deduce the owner

The Chevron was advertised from 01-883 5338 (Autosport 17 Aug 1978 p68) then later from same number evenings/weekends with a Chevy Corvair Super Saloon (Autosport 9 Nov 1978 p67, also 16 Nov 1978 p52).

Another advert appeared from this number in 1979 offering a reward for the return of an ex-Mick Hill, Tony Rosen Super Saloon Capri and gave addresses in Welwyn, Herts and Stanhope Street, London NW1 (Autosport 8 Mar 1979 p53).

Could this have been Tony Strawson?

Any suggestions?

Now Ian Richardson ( Ampthill , Bedfordshire ? ) I could understand ; he was a renowned builder of GM/Ford big-banger motors ( no , Al , that doesn't include DFVs ! ) , and also built the second-best Special Saloon-legal Corvair ever made . Tony Strawson later raced the car ; I remember it DNSing at Snetterton after blowing a head gasket in practice . 7.6 litre iron block Chevy ?

Geoff Richardson ? Kimbolton Airfield , Cambridgeshire , rebuilder/developer of Cosworth FV/BD series engines .

But Jeremy Richardson ?

Tony Rosen-Nash and his mate Ali Hussein started out with a pair of ex-Martin Birrane big bangers ; Boss 429 Mustang and Z28 Camaro respectively , unless anyone knows any better ! I think the pair of them were in the rag trade , and had an interest in the Frox jeans brand . It would be fair to say that Frank Gardner probably never lost any sleep worrying about their collective talent . Tony had one of the funniest accidents I've ever seen , losing the car over the notorious bump exiting the pit road at Brands . Perhaps some of the Orange Overall brigade can remember this ?

Tony Rosen-Nash did indeed at one point have an ex-Mick Hill Boss Capri ; I believe there were two of these , and I think he had the second one . I'm pretty certain that Tony Strawson ( another lovely man ) had the first one , but the history of Strawberry's V8 Capris does seem a little confusing . Did both pass through his hands at one time or another ? I've seen it written that he used both 7.6 and 8.1 litre motors in a Capri , but these would surely have been bowtie motors ; I can remember the car he raced in '77 used a small block Ford motor , presumably either the 289 ( spit ! ) from his Falcon , or a Boss 302 .
