I used to work on the Roger Nathan Imps incidently, the factory car with suspension set up by Frank Costin (hic!) and customers cars. The factory car was an original steel shell i.e. modified road car but all the suspension was tubular fabricated wishbones as I recollect.

Quite possibly,

If it was then I think that Birley ran his Sierra GA?!, Roger Mac's XJS, Brian Chatfields 320i, Tony Davies' Firenza and people like Tim Swadkin and Dale/Stephen Minton in their Escort's entered.

It'll be nice to confirm who, what and when!!

carrera should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
First Thundersaloon race was at Brands Hatch 17th March 1985. It was won by Vince Woodman/Jonathan Buncombe in a 3.4 litre Capri. Runner-up was Rod Birley/John Brindley in an Escort. 3rd Tony and John Davies in the Firenza.

Last Thundersaloon race was in 1994 IIRC.

Glyn,

That Capri is one of the original GA 3.4 Group 2 cars. This is where I get a bit confused because I always though Supersaloons were one-offs built to the championship regs as in the case of Mick Hill's example. In the case of Vince's car this was built to FIA ETCC regs.

(Nice pic BTW can I steal it?).

Peter.

Yes I always thought that this was a FIA car as well, I can certainly remember the commentators rabbiting on about Cologne etc. But the photo is from the July round of Thundersaloons at Brands Hatch.

I don't remember a rule about the building of cars for Supersaloons, other than they should look like the real thing, no matter what was underneath the skin.

Please steal the pic, I know it is going to a good home, unlike another of my photos which is appearing in Motor Sport this month and has been "lifted" from Frank de Jongs site.

I understand that Vince is restoring it for possible use in Classic Thunder.

IIRC Vince woodmans car was indeed an ex works car - a Cologne capri. It was never built or bought for supersaloons. He rarely campaigned it but was always competitive - he gave Baby Bertha a run for its money at Thruxton in '77
Wasn't he always sponsored by Esso Uniflo? thererfore a conflict of sponsors with the Shell logos on the photo
Rambling on a bit does anyone remember Easter BTC in the seventies at Thruxton? A second Capri would be run for Jonathon Buncombe and he would be on the pace despite such rare appearences. Given a full season could he have given Rouse & Spice a run for the class title

A mate of mine has finished restoring a special Capri that was given to one of Fords Capri builders in recognition of their efforts, I will try to find out more details on Saturday as he is helping at Brands but I think although a road car it is a bit special.

That's some interesting history norm, I hadn't realised Vince had owned the Cologne car back then, I thought it was bought for him to do something with after he finished with the BTCC.

As you say, he was sponsored by Esso for a large proportion of his Group 1 Capri days (certainly the latter) i'm not sure who he was backed by in his earlier Escort days though.

By the time the Shell logos appeared, in 1985, his Esso Capri touring car programme had long finished. In between the Grp 1 and Cologne Capri spells, he attempted to make a Grp A Mustang competitive (with regular driving partner Buncombe and CC Motorsport, who built his Gpr 1 cars) and I think they were hoping to do ETC and that the top class of the BTCC would be opened up to allow it in against the Rovers!! but MSA kept the 3600 capacity limit.

Then spent a year driving the 635 BMW, again with CC alongside James Weaver - but a nasty shunt early in the year whilst trying to get on terms with Weaver's pace, knocked his confidence a bit and he stepped down from a full campaign at the end of the year, before doing Thundersaloons.

I hope he gets the 3.4 car out again soon, it would be marvellous.

So do I, it'd be nice to add it to the list.

Here's the story so far -

I've got quite a good list of "targets", some of whom are willing participants should it go ahead. There are quite a few people on the target list that are proving hard to get hold of.

Should it happen, we'll have Ginger Marshall's Kitten there on show, and if things went in their favour - a remote chance of it running!

Still trying to get in touch with Pete Stevens, though I haven't had much chance to do any chasing. I'm hoping to get down to some real "cold calling" in the next two weeks as work should ease off a little (dropping form 60hrs a week to about 35-40).

Just been reading this whole thread (ah, the joys of a leisurely Sunday morning!) and it brough to mind a car I remember from my schoolboy days visiting Mallory Park in the late' 70's - Peter Jurgens' Auston A40!

I seem to recall he actually built two cars - the first was on a 'real' A40 shell, the later one was a spaceframe (the stripped chassis for which was advertised once in Motoring News - as it was called then...)

Wonder whatever happened to one or the other car?

Peter Cartledge had a very rapid A40 as well. Were these A40's the same cars?

The keen eyed of you will notice Bill Shepherds Calibra on there. All two of them.
One (Ric Wood's) is the one that Bill built. The Jon Mann car is the original Pilbeam built car.

Rob ,

What ever happened to the Vauxhall Senator ? I think I heard the Star 'n' Stripes Opel Manta and Terry Nicholl's Capri GAA were being rebuilt ? Any News ?

How about Nigel Garrett's Rover Vitesse V8 (that used to be a Thundersaloon)and what happened to all the Toyota Starlet's that used to race ? I know Nathan Mills is selling one.

Shame about Peter Baldwin's Mini ending up in Japan. Anyway Paul Soames used to race a Maguire Mini.
