Autotransmission advice? Or my Rover has Died as in Sympathy.

Hi all, well it is extremely Ironic but last Friday my Rover 75 started playing up and I diagonosed it was the gearbox. Symptoms are sometimes when you start the car and engage a gear the car violently shudders and shudders with every gear change. However turn the motor off and turn it on again and this usually fixes it and the car will function normally till you need to restart it. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't.

So being Monday I went to the local rover dealer here in Singapore. They ran some test and charge me $50 to tell me my car needs a new gearbox and ecu. The car has done 61700 kms and is 4 years old. Always serviced at the dealer and I have had it 12 months and it has not been driven hard. Just usually the missus and the kids around Singapore.

The dealer then gives me a quote of over 20000K Singapore Yes Twenty Thousand (like 5 or 6000 Pounds). I crap myself and declined and drove the car home.

Under the Singapore System I can scrap the car and would get a fair amount back but I still lose a lot of money on owning it for one year.

Anyone got any good ideas. I am not sure about taking it to an independant workshop as they would probably have to source the unit through Rover anyhow. I may give it a try. Anyone know anything about Rover Gearboxes are they fixable? The car ran fine on the way home from the dealer.

Well I don't suppose there's much chance now of getting any money out of Rover to fix it for you...

I had similar problems in a '98 Mercedes E class (though it had done a few miles more ). I'd suggest finding a specialist auto gearbox workshop. They should be able to diagnose more accurately - could be it just needs an ecu, and if it does need a gearbox they may be able to overhaul it or supply a reconditioned one much cheaper than full dealer price!

I think I will have to find a specialist or even try and drive it over to Malaysia. I wonder if any other model of car has the same Gearbox. Maybe it is BMW unit or something.

Take it out to the forest, shoot it and bury it real deep. Then buy something German or Japanese.

Other than that, I could give you the name of somebody in the UK who could help, but that is not much use if you are in Singapore!!

I called an Auto Transmission place today and they seemed confident that they could get a replacement. Basically the guy said that it will be the same as some other car, i.e a ZF or GM box. He just needs to take a look at it and will be able to tell me and then give me a quote to overhaul or exchange. I will try and get it to him tomorrow and report back. He said something which I found interesting that he thought the gearbox goes into Safe Mode when I restart the car so I can get it to a workshop. That it will be kinder to the gears and change slower.

Update tomorrow.

It is a ZF box. Good news is that it is now in a local auto trans specialist who will rebuild the gearbox for a quarter of the price and give me 6 months warranty. So should be back on the road in a couple of weeks

Good news.. Car is back on the road!!. Recon gearbox at 3800 Sing Dollars with a 6 month warranty. Car drives like normal so I am a happy bloke.

Word of warning, make sure your garage checks your Gearbox oil even if the service intervals do not say to.
