I think the 2.4-mile lap distance is a remnant of the original proposed layout. The revised course, I think, is a bit shorter, and Wikipedia lists it as 2.1 miles.

What's that with the 2 pit stalls on the other side. Isn't that dangerous? How wide is the pitlane?

As someone pointed out on another forum, turn 5 (at 1:00) looks insanely dangerous if it's taken at that speed with that barrier layout!

If 1 car has a problem and hits the barrier in that corner then the entire field is going with him.

Im much more worried about the ALMS race though with slower amateur LMPC and GTC drivers mixed in with the LMP and GT cars on track in that entire complex up until turn 7.

I posted this in the ALMS thread for this event.

The Turn 5, left/right flick doesn't look that awful. Even with a fair few "amateur" drivers, FIA GT did NOT have a crash fest at Bucharest, where they had more than one of these lane-switching chicanes. Turn 5 has an escape road. And anyway, I'd be more concerned with the hard right that follows, and the apparent wall jutting out at that point. However, at that point, the field will pretty much have to be single-file, so I'm not sure that that sport will be a huge worry either.

Even looking at the temporary circuits F1 runs at (and I mean Montreal and Melbourne here), there are choke points where even a partially broadside car would block the track. At Melbourne, it's between Turns 5 and 6, as well as after Turn 7. And the Turn 5 sweeper at Montreal was the site of one mother of a Star Mazda pile-up/stunt show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRXKt1G5fec

That simulation makes it look like the lanes are more on the order of 8-9ft wide, when a road lane is actually 12ft wide. So, it will look narrow at speed with the walls right there, but not as narrow, I don't think, as this simulation might indicate.

I hope the simulation holds true, in that it does NOT show a chicane on Pratt Street.

The InterContinental Harbor Court Hotel in Baltimore has picked up a one-off sponsorship for Simona's Pork Chop for this race. In celebration, they have created a special meal. "Our pork chop will come branded with the #78 and will be accompanied with Hen of Woods mushrooms, savory bread pudding and wild berry sauce." I dunno, doesn't sound like that'd be conducive to nimbly slithering around those concrete barriers...

Waiting for the Pork Chop t-shirts to come out!

Briscoe crashed at turn 5 and was just on the radio slamming the safety there... I can't believe whoever designed this layout thought that barrier would be OK, with only some tyres for protection. It reminds me of the barrier end that Perez hit at Monaco, or the Indy pit wall. Difference is here they're negotiating a high speed left/right within metres of it. It's insane.

It looks about like the crossovers on the Bucharest street circuit, so nothing outlandish.

If you add more tires, you decrease the width at that point. It's kind of a case of "pick your poison".

I don't understand why, if they could temporarily cover the one section of tracks, why couldn't they do likewise for the ones across Pratt Street? I don't care for chicanes, and this one will not help the racing, and will make the start and any restarts much more difficult to form up. (I wish I could have a chat with Tony Cotman about that.)

Sounds like this "event" is a massive debacle with horrible road surfaces, huge safety issues, traffic issues, people blocked from getting to work or to hotels and lack of control over pedestrians and cars and total chaos on ticketing, along with only 10000 seats. What a disaster. Hopefully everyone will stay safe.

Don't know about any of that but the layout of the course is great, IMO. A little bumpy for Indycars, but they'll get through it.

A tropical storm and an earthquake couldn't keep the event from going off, and there are always issues with a brand new event on city streets. I hope they can ease the chaos as well, as there is great future potential, if they can work out the kinks.

Indycar has posted a 7 minute video from the Indy Lights practice. The track looks pretty wide. Turns 1 and 2 reminds me of Turns 3 and 4 in Toronto, the Turn 3 hairpin is very wide, it appears wider that the Long Beach hairpin, and is definitely wider than the Turn 1 hairpin at San Jose. Also, the Turn 5-7 complex looks pretty fast, considering how it looked on the track map. Also, there is a chicane on the main straight. I just don't see how it's possible to do double file starts. Here's the video...

Haha, i love all the nay-saying on here. Comical.

Track looks great, if a tad bumpy, but it makes the Dallaras look fast for once and the drivers are really having to earn thier bucks.

So what if there's a few logistical issues? It's a street race, the first of it's kind in the city! Cut them some slack!

I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow!

At Turns 1 and 2 of the Sao Paulo, Brazil, street circuit, The IndyCar Series has got a left-right chicane which is quite similar to the Turn 5 chicane of Baltimore. However, the Brazilians did it right and left a huge amount of runoff there. Also, they put water tanks in there for barriers, not just tyres.

The inside wall of Turn 5 needs to be moved backwards or if that's not possible, the entire chicane to be moved further away from Turn 6 and closer to Turn 4 to allow more runoff. The escape road is nice to have but Briscoe's accident is typical for that kind of chicane.
Also, did you notice the tyre barriers disintegrating and flying up into the air? They should not do that. That is so 1980s.
