Peter Harding should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Visit www.marshals.org.uk to see whats on when you are free and where, and just volunteer. Any club any location. My experience is that all clubs are supportive even if you don't race with them.

Can you blame them? They probably thought everyone else drove like they did!

Phew

What a read....

I'm not a regular circuit marshal and never been a flag marshal so have no comments on how this or that should be done but....

I gotta say well done to all who have contributed to this thread...

A very emotive (or could have gone that way quite easily) thread and as a bonus it looks as if good things will happen because of this thread....

Marshals modifying their technique and drivers spending time on the bank...

One of the best threads I have read here.....

I said in another post some while back , when I was motocrossing you had to do flag marshalling at clubbie events, otherwise you were not allowed to race.
You were told what time and post you had to go to when you wasn't racing.

Thats good but.....

I would much rather drivers spent a day with marshals because they want to rather than because they have to

An excellent thread, as others have already mentioned.

Much of what has been said supports comments from drivers at the MSA Special Commission on Alternative Marshalling Methods and will, I suspect, take us towards lights as a better alternative in the sort of situation described here. I have made lots of notes for our next meeting on 17th May.

If one red/green colour blind then one will not see red against a green background very clearly , if at all. Is this a reason for flags to be shown against a white background ?

I wasn't at the meeting in question, so won't make a comment about it.
I will however, pick up on a point made by Hepatic a few pages back where he says that the RED flag is more important than the YELLOW flag!
I have to say that I couldn't disagree more!

RED flags around the circuit indicate that racing has been stopped but the YELLOW flag indicates the location of the incident.
It was always drummed into me in my flag training, that if flagging solo - and unable to wave two flags at once, then the YELLOW should be the one you keep hold of!
This is what I preach to flaggies on post with me.

totally agree with you Mark.
If a race has been stopped (for an incident) then us flaggies have a duty to not only warn the drivers but also try to protect the marshals who may well be in attendance at said incident.

All I would say is that Hep has a valid point about "breaking the chain" of the red around the circuit.
To this end, my opinion is that if your flag point is at a crucial point for the chain (and otherwise it would need to travel all the way round the circuit in the opposite direction for your next flag point to see the red) then put it out *somehow*. Doesn't need to be waved properly so the drivers can see it - just so the other posts can see it. And if conditions are such that even that is difficult, you can always drop it after it's clear that the message has been passed.

I believe that some of the problem with seeing flags is the fact that they are so dull in colour, now if we could get the circuits to make flags as bright as the materials used in Hot Air Balloons they would be much easier to see.
I am sure that Camerons of Bristol or Lindstrand of Oswestry could help here, they must lots of Flag sized off cuts.

I am currently trying to sort out a supply of just such flags, or even, flags that can removed from their handles to facilitate washing.

watch this space.
