XR3s....
Not sure if these ran as part of Class C or as a separate 'Invitation' class, or whether they were even classified as part of the BTCC race result. The Autosport version of the result ignores them altogether...
1./#??/Stuart Cole/Brands Hatch Racing/?/Ford Escort XR3i
2./#??/Chris Creswell/Brands Hatch Racing/?/Ford Escort XR3i
Cole finished 12th or 13th overall?
There were about half-a-dozen more XR3is, I'm not sure at the moment who the drivers were- Autosport only mentions Cole & Creswell. Does anyone have the race report from Motoring News, as I think this might have included all of the XR3s?

Time to knod off for today.

Think that's all of '86.

Re the Class D Novas, IIRC, Lanfranchi's was his regular Monorep prodsaloon. Kaye's at the GP meeting might have been a full Group A Nova. Kaye raced a Nova in prodsaloons, but I dont recall whether Containerships were his regular sponsor or not- they did sponsor a 2-car Vauxhall rally team, running a Group A Astra GT/E (Tony Saddington) and Nova (Chris Birkbeck) with distinctive registration numbers.
If Containerships weren't his regular prodsaloon entrant, could Kaye have been using Birkbeck's rally Nova?

Once again, thank you for your time and effort, KA. There were some very small grids every now and then as has been previously mentioned, but looking at the depleted results it's very striking.

??? How can I add to thread 98 ???

Looking back at post 98, it's probably because I'd quoted Jesper's earlier post and added my information to that.

Might be a case of copying and pasting the original text from post 98 into a new post....

O'Brien
Sundstrom

Curnow

Newman
Dooley
Hales
Kirby
Cole XR3i
Creswell XR3i
Shortle XR3i
Rogers XR3i
Argetsinger XR3i
Crudgington
Edwards XR3i
Rogers XR3i
King XR3i
Taft
Brilliant!- I've been trying to work out how many Escorts started and the rest of the drivers. Presumably that's the finishing order?

OK, so I knew we had Stuart Cole and Chris Creswell, but can you fill in the Christian names for the others?

I can guess a few going down the list- I'm pretty sure several of them were fairly well-known FF1600 faces of the period:
Rick Shortle?
Peter Rogers? (I suspect the other Rogers further down the list might be his sister Lucy, who as I recall also raced Formula Ford at the time?

More on the James Kaye Nova at the '86 British GP. It was apparently entered/sponsored by 'Containerships' who were active on the UK rally scene at the time with a pair of Vauxhalls in a distinctive yellow & white colourscheme, with equally distinctive registration numbers- '79BAT' on Birkbeck's Nova, and I think '68BAT' or similar on the Astra. I don't think I remember them being active in prodsaloons as well, but won't swear to this

If it was the Containerships Group A rally Nova that Kaye used at the GP meeting, rather than his own prodsaloon, then this could be the car in question (seen here with Chris Birkbeck on the Manx Rally)

All we need now is a pic of Kaye at the GP....

I can't supply a pic, but (report in Autosport) can confirm it was Birkbeck's Nova Sport, and Kaye's first time out on slick tyres.

Thanks Tim

Alternative link for the pic of the Birkbeck Nova- that first one only seemed to work for me when I was signed in on Flickr....

Just noticed Peter Lovett's name as driver of the Hughes Supra at the opening round?

Didn't remember that one?!

He may have been evaluating the car for the season, or put in to help 'advertise' it perhaps?

Either way it was the first time we'd seen him in the BTCC since his removal from the Sanyo TWR Rover team midway through 1984 IIRC?

I don't know the story behind Lovett being in the Supra- as you say, possibly looking at a full-season drive in it that never came together, or Hughes were looking to sell it and wanted to give it an outing to 'advertise' it- I've got the Motoring News season review here, but it doesn't give any insight, just that it was Lovett's only appearance of the year.

The car next appeared at the GP meeting for David Sears (3rd behind the TWR Rovers), and then Lovett and Bob Meacham drove it at the TT, with Vodafone sponsorship, but didn't start after shunting it in qualifying

I apologise for my laziness, I am keen to help out and plug in any gaps. I don't have much time to go through the whole thread, but could anyone point out which race results that need completing or filling in?

I got 1986-1990 Motoring News newspapers and I got it with me now. Thank you.

I think we've got most of the race results tied down now for '86- what we seem to be missing is qualifying times for quite a few races I think?

Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Thank you for your offer, Bigears. I myself have been off for some time, mainly looking at historical Le Mans results and tid-bits.

As KA mentioned, grid positions is missing for some rounds:
R1: Silverstone (13 April) only pole position known
R5: Brands Hatch (13 July) a few issues at the lower end of the grid
R7: Brands Hatch (25 August) grid positions for the BH Escort XR3s
R9: Silverstone (5 October) incomplete grid

Qualifying times for just about every round bar:
R6: Snetterton (10 August) complete
R7: Brands Hatch (25 August) only the BH Escort XR3s missing

Fastest lap times is in general good shape, except for the odd time missing as follows:
R2: Thruxton (26 May) Lionel Abbott's time missing
R6: Snetterton (10 August) Times for Mike O'Brien, Brian Chatfield and Richard Belcher - all DNFs - missing.

For Round 5, the Brands Hatch GP support race, there's some doubt as to weather Mike Smith and Chris Maries started, qualified or even showed up for that race. Clarification of the matter would be nice.

Finally the points situation is always in need of a bit of tidying up, so if you could add the odd point standings from a few of the races, it would be fine. Dave Brodie won the final round but didn't receive any points, so if you can find clues as to why, that would be nice.

Thats what I can think of for 1986, besides the general discussion about the season.

Jesper

KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!KA has a real shot at the podium!
In their Nov '86 issue (the same one as the famous Ayrton Senna rallycar test) Cars & Car Conversions published an article on the decline of the BTCC

The article is headlined 'Not Fade Away: Why was the 1986 RAC British Saloon Car Championhip such a waste of time' and is headed with a pic of the 12-car grid at Donington.

There are some interesting quotes from drivers and representatives of teams and sponsors:

Andy Rouse felt that the Austin Rover withdrawal in '84 'was the start of the slippery slope; before that the championship was in a reasonably healthy state but people were put off because there was a tarnish to it; manufacturers, for sure were put off'

Conversely, Pete Hall felt that the arrival of TWR/Austin Rover was part of the problem 'not because they were doing anything wrong, but because they came well-prepared, they were just too good and started to frighten people away'

The sheer cost of Group A was a cause for concern- Richard Longman said' the main cause is a lack of money; it is a terminal disease, the rules are very complicated and you can find yourself with a car that is fashionable for one year- after that the manufacturer would prefer that you didn't race it, then you're stuck with a car that cost 50k to build. The capital cost is too high these days...some of the electronic engine management systems cost 5-6k each. The technical explosion has made running costs ridiculous

The handling of the class structure was another issue- Mike Lindsey of Alfa Romeo Dealer Team commented on the dropping of the 1300cc class in the early 80s which excluded a number of cars, followed by reintroducing it for 1986 'when nobody was geared up to do it' Equally, 'In hindsight, I don't think the 3.6-litre upper limit was a good idea either, now we are running to Group A regulations. We should be exactly the same as Europe with no artificial upper limit'

There's quite a lot of comment on a lack of commitment and promotion from former sponsor Trimoco, both Mike Lindsey and Pete Hall remarking on the lack of promotion the series recieved- Hall: I am very critical of Trimoco as a sponsor because it made no effort. Compare the company with Uniroyal which deseves the success of the prodsaloon series because it looked at sponsorship as more than just the name on the car- it saw it as an event, brought customers to every race, got the competitors involved and has always taken an interest.

The RAC gets quite a rough ride....the failure of the deal for Lucas to sponsor the 1986 series, which led to them jumping ship to back F3, the perceived cutting of corners over the number and length of races, shortage of prize money and even lack of garlands & champagne for class winners-
'The races are being cut and cut, to the stage where we only get 30 minutes practice and a 12 lap race, which is about the same as some of the leading FF1600 series get '(Mike Lindsey, ARDT)
'This year, to a certain extent, the championhip has been downgraded with one-day meetings, just one practice session and 12 lap races, rather like a club event..and at Brands on August Bank Holiday Monday, we were reduced from 40 to 20 laps (Max Churchouse, Datapost)

At the Brands GP meeting, Churchouse apparently found himself having to explain to no less than the head of the Post Office why Richard Longman hadn't received a garland for winning Class B....

Communication between the RAC and competitors was apparently poor- for example, the rule requiring a minimum number of starters for full points to be awarded in a class was apparently dropped- but no official notification of this was given to teams. The revived 1300 cc class only saw entries on three occasions, Tony Lanfranchi being the sole starter twice. The article asks if Lanfranchi had started enough (7) races and scored maximum points from them, would the RAC have awarded him the title?

One anonymous driver said 'a lot of the blame could be laid squarely at the door of the RAC' and described it as 'a professional championhip run by amateurs'

The article ends with an outline of the changes proposed for '87- the new class structure (A-2501+, B-2001-2500, C-1601-2000 and D- up to 1600), the removal of the 3.6 litre limit, an increase to 12 rounds and the expected appointment of a Championship Co-Ordinator

Interesting points there, KA. This leads to why 1987 was the start of a BTCC revival - sheer determination and persinstance from the competitors?
