Daytona 24 Hours

Did anybody from the UK attend this years race. If so can you give a rough idea of how much the whole expedition cost you..especially if you went just for the meeting and didnt tie another trip in with it.

PaulSands: I live about sixty miles away. Daytona is like a second home to me :-). I would be happy to try to verify information or lend thoughts to things. Please feel free to email me directly.

The great advantage will be that the 24 isn't a huge fan draw, so your accomodation costs won't be so bad (NOT Daytona 500 level). There really won't be traffic problems, so renting a car and driving yourself around won't be too big a challenge--although we drive on the wrong side of the road :-)

As a nearly likelong resident of Central Florida I can also possibly give you insight on some other points of interest in the area. We have a lot of things besides Mickey and Shamu to entertain.

Paul,

I've been twice from the UK. It is possible on a fairly cheap budget.

Airfares to Orlando are quite low in Jan/Feb as it is out of season for the UK. It is about a 2hr drive.

Book your car hire from the UK with Alamo/Hertz as it works out cheaper, there sould be nothing to pay when you get there, but they will try to upgrade to get some cash.

Daytona tickets are available online / mail order etc.

The race is not like LM. A lot of people turn up with RV's and park next to the track on the infield making it hard to watch the race, although there is a path along the front.

As above, traffic was not a problem, small jam on race morning thats all. There is a mall just outside plus bar and grills etc. Loads of hotels on Daytona beach, all have rooms to suit most budgets.

You might be able to get a week trip fairly cheap to Orlando. Join the Disney people for the flight, get a car and either find a hotel (hard in speedweek) or drive out of town.

Trips from the UK are fairly quiet during Jan/Feb so you might get a bargain, get on the phone now to BA/Virgin/TCD/Tho Cook and see what they offer.

If you're in the area for some time, check out St. Augustine if you're into history. That's about 1.5 hours up the coast from Daytona. Yes, there is more to Florida than the Mouse.

Been there, I would second that.

Also the various flying clubs around.

Fantasty of Flight, about 3 hrs from Daytona. Has a private Airforce bigger than many countries. Also loads of aircraft waiting repair, engines galore.

Look the part and hire a dream car from exotic cars or a 5.0 Mustang from Inter American.

Wow, I am not the only one! More airplane nuts out there?Loads of really kooky engines at these places. It I recall I think I saw a 24 cylinder at Flying Tigers. They all do beautiful work on the planes.

St. Augustine is fantastic and I highly recomend the drive on A1A from Daytona up to St. Augustine.
