2k track day car wanted any ideas

ok I have 2k to spend on a track day car it will have to be road legal so I can drive it to the circuit, or it will have to come with a trailer, I have a few cars in mind any thoughts on them or any other ideas welcome. I would love a single seater but they are too expensive I think.

1. Peugeot 205 gti mi16 conversion

2. Honda civic vti 92>96

3. Vauxhall nova 2ltr 16v

4. volkswagon golf gti 16v mk2

Go for something road legal, otherwise you'll end up spending 1/4 of your budget just on the trailer.

1. Pug 205 are good cars, handle fantasic, but try to find one with the M16 already done, or else it'll be expensive.

2. Not sure if a Civic form that age range could be had for £2k. Maybe a CRX? Still has a VTEC.

3. Nova is a good choice, £2k will be plenty to get a good 2L conversion. Make sure Courtney or Regal did the swap though, they are the bets Vaux tuners out there. Then strip the back seats out to save a bit of weight and have fun!

4. VW Golfs are quite heavy, but can be made a lot lighter. Personally, I'd look for a MK1, and strip it out to embarrass the most expensive trackday cars out there.

cheers for the links, there is a nice 205 mi16 for sale at the pug performance site but i wont have the cash for about another month .hopefully it will still be there, then all i need is to get it checked out and i get a weekend away whey hey.

you are right, that gen of civic will be hard to get a good one for that price. get a crx or the previous gen civic for under 2k easy. have a choice of 150 bhp vtec or a 130 bhp 1.6i16v

My only experience of VTECs is on Gran Turismo, but they have a good reputation for being great drivers' engines!

Scott, drop PP a line and ask them to keep the car back for a while. I'm sure they could do it if you asked them nicely...

might be worth a try Hobson. I just sold my 97 civic vti a couple of months ago you should try to get a go its the best feeling when the vtec kicks in you don't want to change gear and you don't have to till 8000rpm. I could be tempted by a crx although ive never driven one , the Peugeot would be cheaper to keep on the road if maybe not quite as reliable.

just seen a 205 in the auto trader gti6 engine, gear box, gti6 brakes bilstein suspention, roll cage and trailer all for 2k ono and at a garage 13 miles from me too. going to go for a look as soon as poss .

That 6 speed box should be fun on the track. And the GTi6 engine is no slouch either. Sounds like its specially prep'd for Trackdays!

Porsche 924 (dirt cheap, rear wheel drive, plenty of tuning bits, 50/50 weight distribution, cheap to fix)

Or,

Porsche 924S (as above, 150BHP, a lot quicker round a track than many more powerful cars due to the handling) - should be able to get an 'ok' one for 2K. Lots of race bits available - plastic panels etc - ditto an old 944 (identical mechanicals to a 924S, but a tiny bit slower)

Other than that, a Mk 1 Golf GTI would be my choice, or a Mini, but RWD is more fun. You could also get a TR7 converted to V8 for around that much. Be different!

Out of that lot i'd go for the Pug.....it's so light and that makes up for a BHP deficit.

Also the Fiat Uno Turbo - great engine, and the suspension settings from a Fiat Challenge race car would make a suprisingly good track car. Could be a reliable 150BHP - and under 750 kgs quite easily

hey i got a crx 16 16v for £400 16" alloys s/s exhaust and lowred alarm and removable steering wheel i also got a couple of clubman seats for £60 of a mate now its time to strip it out and i still have cash to spend on it .

Just started this trackday lark and me and a couple of mates decided to buy a car and the main criteria was:
1. rear or four wheel drive
2. under 2k
3. torquey engine pos 6 cylinder

we then scanned www.racecar.co.uk and found BMW 325i for a grand that had everything sorted on it as he used it for sprints, all we did was bunged a cage in it and race seat and we were trackdaying

reliable, cheap for parts, endless modifications available

Get it handling well should be the main priority imo.
