The last hurrah..

For the track.. much maligned as it is.. the last street race to be held in Sydney for the foreseeable future.

The title is still on the line. 2 protagonists from the same team, ready to have fun figuring out who's the team leader at the house of 8's...

Prodrive seem to be on the way back.. engine complaints not withstanding..

Some of the pilots are driving for their careers.. Tander, Bright, Pither to name a few...

And it might be the last time we see a Supercar Volvo, other than in a museum....

Lets go make some noise...

Until the Govt retuns a budget surplus, Hmm think I will be six foot under by then.

Not much fun when its raining so hard, water has nowhere to go and the races are ruined. That will be my main memory of this place when its over. (that, and the better memory of Courtney waving at 888 garage as he gets back out to win in 2010).

Negative, no need with the event thankfully disappearing after December.

Such a great idea for a race on paper, executed poorly.

Unless you're a corporate.

Another swing and a miss for Supercars, in terms of street races.

Should be eventful this year, as always.

Interesting that the Motorworld Sydney event being promoted by NSW Tourism is on the same weekend down at Eastern Creek. Curious scheduling.

At least with DJRTP moving to a permanent Shell Helix livery next year, we won't be inflicted with the same press release stating how 'excited / thrilled / honoured' the team are before every meeting announcing the cars livery. All for a bit of variety every now and then, but before every round is a bit tedious.

Shame really, after the almost decade of ranting and raving Tony Cochrane went through to get the event up and running for 2009, it's dead and buried after 2016......

Ultimately was it worth all the effort in the end? Did anyone get anything out of it?

Interesting that they've brought a concert, one of the original major selling points of the event, back for the last meeting there..... where was it from 2012-2015?

Arguably the best pit access from a spectator's viewpoint in Australia

A small consolation to the non-corporate spectators who get crap views of actual racing: for 25 dollars you can get excellent vision of mechanics straightening panels...

Agreed. Much like V8s and Canberra didn't mix. Here's hoping VASC can at least come up with something presentable for Joe Public at Newcastle, they're certainly backing themselves into a corner.

McGrath foundation scheme for Percat. He's also blushing towards LDM as they gave him his "1st win in supercars" at Clipsal earlier this year. Didnt he win some obscure race in country NSW once?

Dwell and bemoan?

Not at all. Surely this is a celebration? The end of one of the more unsuccessful and poorly executed events in Australian motorsport history.

Despite massive claims that were proven to be failures such as the below - the event will disappear with a whimper.

Quote:
It will be a spectacular display of machines reaching speeds of up to 270km/h with international headline acts in the order of Kylie Minogue and Coldplay kick-starting what will become the city's biggest party since the 2000 Olympics.
Quote:
"We will scour the globe to find a major international act to perform at the event. We will have a big show. We want to make it Sydney's biggest party," V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane says.
Quote:
A serious coup for Sydney which will bring 2500 international visitors, 20,000 interstate guests and a total crowd of 250,000 to our doorstep for another chance to show off.

The event hasn't worked as well as hoped, no doubt about it. I certainly don't believe it's a cause for celebration but it is the right call to move along.

I'm not sure where I'd place it in the unsuccessful and poorly executed list as in some ways it is executed quite well but for sure there have been many parts of it that have not been executed well, for whatever reason.

My feeling is that it would stack up better than events such as the Race of 1000 years in Adelaide, the Supertouring Bathurst races, dozens of national series rounds (of varying names) that have not been commercially successful, maybe even the large commercial losses of rally australia would place that as worse and the list goes on.

Short version I guess is that it hasn't been the best motorsport event ever in Aus but not the worst either.

Try telling that to the local residents and businesses who have been adversely affected over the last 7 years. They are celebrating.

What was wrong with the race of 1000 years?

http://www.racerviews.com/2013/09/28...of-1000-years/

The legacy of the Sydney 500 is no doubt hurt by the outlandish and in hindsight the ridiculous claims by Tony Cochrane back in 2008 and 2009 about what the event would achieve.

The scathing Auditor Generals report into the event also place it very much in lower echelon of Australian motorsport events.
