Phillip Island?

Hi,

I'm planning on going to a round of the V8 Supercars next year in Oz. Hopefully like to Visit the Phillp Island circuit.

As its my first trip to Oz and I don't know the Geography that well, can anyone point me in the direction of a Site for the circuit and also any good V8 sites?

Hi Eddie... Philip Island is a fair way out of Melbourne which I assume would be your base. The website for the racing club that runs the circuit is http://www.piarc.com.au/

Good V8 sites include www.conrod.com.au, which is a chat site basically, but has most of the news before the press are game to print it...

Honourable mention to www.racetime.com.au as well, run by our very own RaceTime, and if you want the official line from the series promoter, www.v8supercar.com.au

Hope this helps....

Great stuff.

What sort of distance is Phillip Island from Melbourne then?

Thanks for the link.

PIARC, btw, whilst they provide officials for the track, don;t actually run it - that's done by Phillip Island Motor Sports Pty Ltd - or PIMS - Forbesy gave the link for that one earlier.

PIARC will be the officiating group that looks after the V8 Supercar round at Phillip Island.

So if you are an accredited official in the UK you may even want to officiate at the round.

Then again you may just want to go, to take in the spectacle.

I'd probably go to take in the spectacle.

As no one else answered - Phillip Island in SSE of Melbourne - about 1 3/4 hours driving from the city centre. Close enough for me to drive there and back each day I am down there (1 hr 10 mins each way - actually close time wise to me that Calder Park which is near Melbourne Airport!!)

Reasonably good accommodation down there BUT believe me they hike up the prices during race meetings - eg a triple room I would normally pay$100-110 a night for rose during the last PIARC Island Magic meeting to $170 a night - so if you do plan to stay down there shop around.

Sorry RaceTime, not a particular expert on Philip Island, being a Sydneysider and all... all I remember is that it is a bloody long way from the airport

If you arent too fussed about your digs, one of the serviced apartments in the city itself, like Quest Apartments is quite cheap for the amount of room you get, certainly it has generally 2 double bedrooms for $140-$150 per night... full kitchen and the like.. somewhere like Alphington or Flemington, there might be one closer.. then just drive I suppose....

Arghhh I certainly wouldn't be recommending Flemington - other side of the city to Ph Island <g> - Be OK for the GP or Calder.

Probably one of the best ways would be via a package tour (especially if you are coming from the Old Dart) - check with travel agents as generally things like this can't be booked over here - they have to be done before you leave.

Pepsi,

I am denying everything.

Although I have noticed the potographers have started to follow me around now. Whenever I am on the track I am now getting a lot more photos taken of me.

I am not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing yet. hehehe

Well they could sit at turn 6 and cheer like the guys did at Island Magic.

I recommend spending some time at turn 12. If you can get a spot on the fence. Each time as we leave the circuit for the day I stop ad watch the cars through twelve, and admire the sheer speed of the circuit.

Hey Eddie,
not a site based on the circuit itself, but theres a few people on their forums who go to the race, and can probably tell you where a good spot is to be on the track, its www.v8central.com

But Phillip Island is a pretty small place, and is pretty hard to get lost there! But yeah, I'll be there, and it's a good circuit for the car racing, you should have a blast, good luck planning your trip!

Cheers

<cough> It has to be said- isn't anywhere better than England

Seriously April - Autumn - can be warm-temprate days but windy whist July - surprised a race meeting has even been scheduled for that month - middle of winter - most likely cold, wet, windy.

Maybe they are trying to make you feel at home?

How can I put this - I come from Birmingham (right you lot - SHADDUP!!!!) But I have now been here 40 years next April so I feel the Australian weather.

For you it won;t be as cold as England can get....but, if yu want a nice warm fuzzy feeling - just imagine that it probably won;t be as cold as the reception the Pommy Cricket team is going to get when they go back home

Seriosly - if you want to get an idea of weather patterns around that time, take a look at this URL
http://www.wunderground.com/weathers...p?ID=IVICFERN1
and go and select the months of the year you are interested in - that weather station runs at my home - 68 km in a direct line from Phillip Island - for the Island take off a couple of degrees during winter...

RT- Tell the truth about the Phillip Island wind? I've heard it can cut through thermal underwear with ease...

A Brummie ehh?

OK we'll leave the cricket out of it, but thanks for all the links and info guys.

Just got to start saving, think I'll have to miss a few BTCC meetings next year too. But I'm sure the V8's will make up for it.

A Phillip Island wind is nothing like a North Sea breeze.

Or Silverstone in January.......

How do you grow anything with inly 6 hours of daylight?
