Drink Portimão, Portugal (Rounds 9 & 10) - 2nd - 4th July

Rounds 9&10 of the World Touring Car Championship - 2nd - 4th July
AUTÓDROMO INTERNACIONAL DO ALGARVE

Introduction
  • New track, old country. The World Touring Car Championship heads to Portugal next, at a new venue and with a new driver in tow, last years BTCC champion Colin Turkington. Turkington has raced in the WTCC before as a guest entry in 2007's race at Brands Hatch where he finished 3rd and 4th. Will he match this performance? We'll just have to wait and see. Algarve should be interesting, as it's one of the longest and most challenging tracks this season. Also how will the SEAT's fair at a track like this, with it's long straights and constant changes in elevation?
Track Information
  • 11 Laps per race
  • 4,654 Metres long
  • 7 km North of Portimão
  • First Race at the track
Current Top Ten
  1. Yvan Muller - 128 points
  2. Gabriele Tarquini - 109 points
  3. Andy Prialux - 105 points
  4. Robert Huff - 104 points
  5. Tiago Monteiro - 68 points
  6. Tom Coronel - 62 points
  7. Alain Menu - 61 points
  8. Augusto Farfus - 53 points
  9. Jordi Gené Guerrero - 36 points
  10. Fredy Barth - 33 points
Further Information
Discussion!

Starter Questions:
  • How good do you think Colin Turkington will be?
  • Will this track be better then Porto?
  • Will the SEAT's dominate?

waiting to find out the euro sport plans for this race. I say that the BTCC champion might do alright as no body has seen this track before.

Subaru_WRX_STi has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
the track is amazing, who watched last year FIA GT race there, the battle between Alex Muller (Vitaphone Maserati) and Enrique Bernolidi (DKR Corvette) for 10 longs minutes !!!

This track is going to suck for the WTCC. Its too long for the length of the races. There's not enough fast portions to make it worthwhile.

Does Algarve have a shorter layout?

the cars will race on the 4.6km version of this track and there are many layouts on this track so there might be a shorter one somewhere.

Practice session 1 has started.

As of writing Turkington is eighth quickest.

Much as beach football is of massive interest, any chance Eurosport could get their schedules right just once?

Hehe, yeah they failed again.

I'll second the post about Plato and Thompson's commentary! Must admit my heart skipped a beat when Turkington first jumped to provisional pole, but soon realised it was not to last, yet he still ended up 10th. Not bad I'll say.

For the top ten -

P1: Monteiro
P2: Muller
P3: Farfus
P4: Tarquini
P5: Huff
P6: Michelisz
P7: Gene
P8: Priaulx
P9: Menu
P10: Turkington

Thought Colin did a great job. Did anyone else hear what James Thomson said about how after practise yesterday they decided that Turkington was a bit too fast, so even though he has the older aero pack on the car, he is running the same weight as all the 2010 spec BMWs now.

Should be an interesting race tomorrow - hopefully the weather stays hot and the BMWs can come through the field as the races ware on.

Good first race, nice to see Tiago Monteiro win at his home race.

Race 1 was good.

Thanks to the elevations it's a very nice track.

im sorry but Barth's move on Turkington was a bit out of order the track is nice but it is no way a touring car track imo i personally think it suits bikes and sports / gt / le mans series cars a lot better

I know what you mean. It flows a bit too well and has no real stop/start corners for overtaking that a touring car likes. It still looks good though, I like that penultimate right hander. The angle on the TV reminds me of Paddock Hill.

Race 2 was not as good as race 1 but still ok.

Huffy got a 30s penalty for contact with several other cars.

Odd how Huff hits Farfus and Farfus loses 1-2 places = penalty for Huff. Barth knocks Turkington and Priaulx out and gets nothing...
