Steve Holmes should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Racing Capris

You'd be keen on this Peter:

http://www.centralmusclecars.co.nz/p...rnd4_1006.html

The owner, Roger Townshend, also owns the 1973 RS2600 which Paul Fahey imported into New Zealand. Was aparently a spare works car. Fahey raced it for one season as purchased before importing a quad-cam engine for it. He was well connected at Boreham, had previously purchased the spare Allan Mann FVA Escort from the 1969 season.

Steve,

Yep that's the 2600, IIRC there is also an ex works GA 3400 in New Zealand. It's the ex Moffat car.

Zef,

If you do see Terry, give him my regards.

Ross Bremer campaigns one just like that here in the States. I believe it's the old Horst Kwech and Harry Theodoracopulos car. I have also seen Brian Redman run a dark blue one out of Bob Akin stable of cars. But that was about a year or two before Bob passed

If I've done this right there should be a picture of Ross Bremers car here:-

Great pictures, but a bit on the large size (please see FAQ's re posting pictures and image sizes). Can you reduce them, please?

I also think that we have got so far away from TVR photos, that I will split this thread shortly, from Steve Holmes post (#11)! What do you want me to call the new thread - 'Cologne Capris', 'Ex works Capris' or something else?

Sorry about that, I posted them using "Image Shack" and selected the 320x240 size so didn't expect them to be that big. Now that they are up how do I change the size?

If you mean the Cologne, it started off as a German based "Cologne" 2.6 bored/stroked to 2.9 but it wasn't competitive with the CSL so they moved to the Cosworth GAA and whilst the cars were prepared in Cologne they weren't "Cologne Capris" anymore.

Fabulous cars those. I think you'd be hard pressed not to admit that the Ford Capri was the greatest touring car ever raced. Not only that, but it was a fabulous road car to drive and a great looker to boot.

Full marks for setting up another Capri thread !

absolute tosh!!

The Lotus Cortina is the greatest SALOON car ever raced (obviously)

Closely followed by the BMW E30 M3, then the BMW 3.0 csl and then the Capri

All in my extremely humble (but undeniably correct) opinion

All great cars for sure... but none of them raced [and won] at top level touring cars through 3 different evolutions over almost 18 years. Also, the Ford Capri was launched on the very day I was born 24.01.1969... so you can guarantee that I'm not biased in any way :-)

Moving the timeline forward a little... does anyone know what happened to the Zakspeed spaceframed Capri IIIs of the late 1970s, early 1980s ? Did they ever get into private hands ? Also what was the basis for that engine they had... was it a Kent block or something ?

I agree with Johnners, MK1 Cortinas rule, closely followed by Capris and Escorts.

Bavarian motor Werks don't do anything for me I'm afraid

No surprise on the mk1 Cortinas I used to be a Ford fanatic... even spent three years in Essex working for them in the early 1990s... but since they became an all fwd marque, they've switched me off. If you need to drive a relatively new car... with some poke and rwd... you're left with little option other than Bavarian's best. I've a 325ci sport now which is probably the Capri of the mid 2000s !

I have downgraded the 635 and SD1 threads, since they are now copied into the chassis History Archive. I thought I'd 'stick' this one up in the hope that someone would like to put some 'meat' onto the chassis histories of the Caprisin order to achieve a similar result. Anyone up for it?

I can just about remember seing them at the Donnington Park non-championship race in '80 (i was 8). We were there with Jim Evans who was racing his 'Esprit' in the Gr5 class, he qualified well but i don't believe he raced. I digress. Anyway, i've loved those Zakspeeds ever since.

I looked into what i could find out about them on the net and came across this site which is pretty comprehensive and is still updated:

Wow, I'd not seen that site before... its pretty good on the Zakspeeds. I've never actually seen them race myself, but have always been a massive racing Capri fan myself since the late 1970s. The closest I got to the Zakspeeds was a Burago model that my parents tricked me with when I was 17 and told me they'd bought me a 'racing capri' for Christmas

driftwood has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
reading this thread reminds me of various things

1 NZ Cologne Capri
when i went to NZ in 1990 for my 3 month tour i happened to sit next to Paul Faheys niece ( living in uk but going home to the clan) then in the NZ rac emags whilst i was there a man had bought the shell of a cologne capri stating it was the ex Fahey and he was searching for the missing parts ie engine ( GaaV6 ) gearbox suspension etc
he also had a foto of the car when it raced in Asia i think he had singapore or ANZ sponsorship for that event
so i guess the car is now rebuilt having seen the fotos earlier in the thread

2 Zakspeed capri in the last months or so Fast Ford type mag had an article on the zakspeed capri now fully restored
1 of the Gp 5 Zakspeed escorts is in NZ also

3 racing capris in general
Supersaloon capris
Mick Hill Tony Strawson circa 72/3
Doug Niven at croft ingleston ( not sure of ot was the Mich Hill Capris had BOSS engine i believe
Vince Woodman Gp 2 special saloons later GpA Tricentrol Capri
i think he dragged out his Gp2 capri fo rsome thundersaloon races

Lydden in the 80`s had Garry Charlwood with Capri with jagv12 engine fitted
Thundersaloon Gatrac built Capri Gaa engine Nick Oatway sold later i think to Terry ? Nicholls

I recall in 89 90 (a replica ?) Cologne Capri built to race driven by norris miles? but owned by a guy who i think was i nvolved in Old no 1 Bently thing

Tom Walkinshaw owned the Lauda capris sold at auction 2/3 years ago - i believe Ric Wood has it now and another cologne Capri

ive left room for others to add comments

Top additional info there driftwood!

I can remember a few of the names and cars you mention but had to wait until I read about a lot of them like the superloon cars as they were bit before my time.

The Grp 1 early 80's are fond memories, Vince like you say was one of the top pedallers of Capris in UK.

That Charlwood car was a helluva beast! Saw it one in a Thruxton special saloons race i think?!

I sort of remember the Norris Miles Cologne story as well. He'd been quite a rapid pedaller of Alfa's and Rover's in prodsaloons in the 80's and obviously fancied something more potent to play with. Don't think it was out very often though.

Would certainly be interesting to get more info on that car, who ran it and what it's doing now.

davyboy yeah i was lucky enough to have a Bburago Zakspeed car as a lad as well! I'm still looking for the damned thing to stick on a shelf with loads of other models!
