Brian Chatfield's BMW's.
Hello everyone, does anyone have pictures and/or info' on the Group 5 320 BMW's which Brian Chatfield ran in various series during the '80/90's? Does anyone know where they may be today? I believe he had at least two and possibly even three different cars .Once again thanks in advance Ian.

I might have a couple of pics somewhere- I'll have a look. Didn't he run one, sometimes both of them, in Thundersaloons?

Hi Ian,
OK so here I am....Thought we already did this ??? But to refresh your memory; He had 2 cars. one was ex Gerry Tyack, he bought it from Walkinshaw who got it from BMW. It was one of the HAT cars from `77 that Peterson & Quester drove. It was chassis # E21-R1-07, it is now in Hong Kong & the lucky owner is a fellow contributor to this forum. The other car was chassis # E21-R1-12 & was the Junior Team car that Eddie Cheever drove through most of `77 (after he destroyed another one at the first round at Zolder..) Stuck drove it at the round when the `Juniors` were banned for bad behaviour..It then became the BMW Italia Osella car for `78. Alex |

Great stuff, thanks for the refresher Alex.
As you say, we may have covered this before in the big 320 thread, so it might be worth mergeing this into that. Ian I guess you've seen that thread? You've porbably even posted in it? |

In my notes I had Chatfield acquiring his second car in '89 fitted with a turbo engine which he replaced with a turbo Sierra Cosworth motor! He is also supposed to have added a sloping rear faired in screen on similar lines to that used by Schnitzer on their lowline cars of '81 and to the Jim Busby IMSA car. This is the car I am most intrigued about but have no pictorial evidence. Thanks in advance Ian.

Yeah, me too.
I think I even posted a pic from a Donington Special Saloon race in 1985 somewhere? If not I'll post it anyway. |

Dont know what the problem is there, you should be able to click on the thumbnail ,go to image shack and save the full size pic to your computer.
Ill try and host it somewhere else. Dan |

I eventually got Dan's photo and found that it was not a 320 but a 2002 which I did not know Chatfield had ever owned.Anything from anybody about the 2002? Thanks to Dan for his perseverance! Ian.

Hi everyone!
First of all I'd like to introduce myself: My Name is Flo, I live in Germany an I'm currently trying to becom an engineer on the TU of Munich. My great love are the grop 5 saloon cars and so I guess it was no wonder to find this board (which, to my opinion is a very fine platform for racecars) sooner or later @Ian: We've already 'met' some time ago aboard the german GT-Eins-Board and I guess I might have some ideas about this cars history... (I know, only facts count, but it is very difficult for a 24 year old student to get near to a "wagenpass" or something equal... ) First of all the car is pretty likely the one seen on the 2007 Goodwood-Festival and which is currently for sale on racecarsdirect.com The owner might (the web sometimes is a doubtable source...) be Alex Elliott in Sussex (UK) Furthermore it is also pretty likely that this car is in fact an original Schnitzer-2002 turbo, raced in 1977 in the german DRM. Why? Especially the rear-fenders led me to this conclusion. As far as I know only the Schnitzer-"works"-cars had this fenders (of course they were an independent tuner). They were introduced after the first races in 1977 and were only mounted on the Schnitzer-cars... (schnitzer also made customer cars for guys like Karl Oppitzhauser - who later owned an original-schnitzer-car - or Franz Lassnig, but they had differerntly shaped fenders!) The car we see here should have then passed into the hands of Franz Albert, who gave it a run from 1978 until 1981 in severl rounds of DRM and other national events) This leeds me to my second hint on the cars history: The front-wing. As far as I remember Franz Albert gave the car somewaht around 1978/79 a new shovel-nose front-wing, whioch reminds me pretty much of the one seen on the pic above and the ones below. I should have historic picture-reference somewhere on my HD - I'll do some digging later (The car also became a new rear-wing which might explain the slightly different shape of the current wing compared to the Schnitzers own restored car...) If all that is right, then the car was originally driven by Harald Ertl and Peter Hennige in 1977... (The Schnitzer's restored car- clothed correctly in the Klaus Ludwig dress, is by the way the car that was passed to Sepp Manhalter in 1978 and later, I guess 1979 to Karl Oppitzhauser) Here some pics found on flickr.com from the mentioned Goodwood'07 http://www.flickr.com/photos/jsanford/666043255/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/m3evo2/601601544/ regards, Flo P.S.: Sorry for my english... Kevan, I see you still haven't found out anything new about your Fischer car. I think you should try contacting Jörg Obermoser via his website, he was racing a 320 around the same time as you know. Perhaps he can shed some light on Gustav Fischer as they must undoutably have met at some stage.
