If Penske want McLaughlin bad enough, I can see a straight swap with Pye being possible.

Holden own the HRT nameplate don't they? Take it wherever they want.

4 car 888 outfit next year perhaps? 2 888 redbulls and 2 stickered as HRT?

Simon Mc saves the soon to be importer a few bucks and guarantees them 4 cars consistently fighting for wins week in week out.

888 get the merchandise sales that go with the HRT name. Not to mention the marketing of Lowndes 'back' in a HRT car... sort of.

It's very rare for a Penske-owned team to turf a driver after just a single full season.

If history has shown us anything, it's that Penske gives his drivers plenty of time to deliver results...and then some more. (unless your name was Kevin Cogan of course...)

I think if Pye has a halfway reasonable year, he'll be back for 2017.

Especially considering the late effort they went to to ensure he had a full-time seat with them for this year.

Ryan Story talks about Penske 2017

Is it just me or does it sound like Penske are coming up with reasons why not to re-sign Pye?

Given the loyalty Penske teams have shown all their drivers (bar 1 or 2 only) in the past, giving them multiple years to perform, i find it highly unlikely they would turn Pye after this year, especially given all the effort they went to to get him in a car for this year.

Did they go to a lot of effort to get a second car for Pye, or just a second car? I'd suggest that they knew after last year that a two car team model is definitely a cleverer way to operate on many grounds. Despite the McLaughlin heading to Europe this weekend, there is word that a deal with Penske has already been agreed to...

What do people make of James Phelps performance on the last episode of Inside Supercars? Seemed unnecessarily combative during the discussion. When Fogarty and Newton were speaking, they were reasoned and interesting, not too much dogma

Everyone knows he's a flog, so I'm sitting here pretty confused as to what he actually brings to the show.

It was reported pretty heavily in the media that the plan for 2016 was one car only for Coulthard, but Pye's efforts at Bathurst last year persuaded the Penske organisation to run a second car for him, and plans were put in place from there.

He is News Limited's main V8Supercar reporter, and given the rights holders are part-owned by News Limited, and the show airs on that channel, he was always going to be a part of the mix for a show like this (as the likes of Paul Kent, a fellow News Limited journalist, is in the mix at NRL 360)

I was kinda shocked to see Foges pop up on the show given he writes for Fairfax...

Spot on. Phelps wanted to make it a competition of who had the better exclusive and inside word. Enjoyed the journos opinions.

Peckstar, it was stated by the team and widely reported that DJRTP's intention was just 1 car again in 2016.

Fast forward to Bathurst and he was a standout. The result didn’t come, but the performance was so impressive it landed Pye a seat with DJR Team Penske this season alongside Fabian Coulthard in an unexpected expansion.

Would have loved to have heard the 2 journos opinions but Phelps and Skaife barked over them which made it impossible.

I agree, Phelps was out of order through that segment. Could have been a good one but was ruined. What a pest.

Skaife should know better, but likes to make his point known....

But as for Phelps, he was playing with the big boys and looked out of place....
