That's odd, considering Ford has a deal to provide all the engines for Champ cars next year. Maybe NH is going to field and IRL team to though...

Indeed, Toyota have pulled out of CART(they're going to IRL) and Newman-Haas are staying in CART, so I think it's just a rumour.

Sounds like bull to me. A couple of points:
1. Mario Andretti is buying into the team this year, and he's a member of the board of CART. 2. Carl Haas is the #1 importer of Lola in North America. IRL recently dumped all over Lola's attempt to become a chassis supplier for them. I just can't see Newman-Haas running IRL. |

Okay, I read the story on grandprix.com
I don't think the guy who read that story even knows the difference between CART and the IRL. "This is not cofirmed but it does make sense..." Which means it's pure spectulation and paddock gossip. Newmann-Haas are confirmed for a two-car effort in CART next year, with Mario Andretti possibly heading up a third car on a "separate" team out of the Newmann-Haas shop. Carl Haas' business is in high-end imported cars... His customers tend to appreciate road racing over ovals. Paul Newman _is_ a road racer. They're going to stay onboard with CART as long as the series lasts. Last edited by Lee Janotta; 15 Sep 2002 at 16:21. |

Paul Newman, when asked if Newman-Haas were likely to go to the IRL is reported to have replied"over my dead body" of words to that effect. Da Matta at last report has said that it was only 50/50 that he would go to F1 and that was 10 days ago.

Confirmed: Da Matta will race for Toyota in 2003
Cristiano da Matta will be the another Toyota driver in 2003. The brazilian concluded his contract with the japanese team last week, although it might be divulged only at Sukuza, according to the team interests.
Da Matta, who leads the CART championship and probably will be the champion, will move to F1 to continue his career. His team, Newmann-Hass, is leaving the CART to go to the more sponsored (and oval) IRL, and Da Matta will be unemployed. "I won't race at IRL, that's not motorsport", said the brazilian. "If I were forced to go there, I prefer going back to Belo Horizonte (his home city in Brazil) and ride my bike". As a term on the contract, Toyota will supply its motors to Newmann-Hass next year freely. Last May, Da Matta did a test for Toyota. He run 96 and did a 0.847s time lower than McNish did at the same day. |

Hold up.......Carl Hass has totally denied that Newmann Hass is pulling out of Cart ....Its only a new team set up by Hass on his own that is racing in IRL next year .
Good if Da Matta is coming to F1 , but im sure its not for all the reason written above |

Toyota wants their driver in F1. Toyota wants their team in IRL. Toyota wants alot of things out of Paul and Carl. I wish daMatta all the luck in the world and would be happy if he got his big break. But then why would Helio have just flown out there? At any rate, I just hope, and trust, that Newman/Haas will remain in CART. I hope that they sell daMatta to Toyota for a ludicrous amount of money and laugh all the way to the bank as they sign Franchitti. And then I hope that daMatta takes the world by storm.
...And that Chevy wins the Indy 500. |

He'll race for Toyota in F1, and Carl Haas will enter a Toyota Powered car in the IRL. That is part of the deal!
