Reverse Gears for M'bike engined single seaters

Girls/Boys,
Just heard that the MSA and BRSCC have put in place a rule that m'bike engined single seaters must have reverse gears by August this year. John Corbyn from Jedi got the news yesterday...... bummer as it can cost around 600 quid to get it fitted.

can't believe that:

A it wasn't a rule already, and

B you'd take to the track without one (you spin across the track with the pack coming towards you and you need to go backwards)

Perhaps its just for formula honda, but it sounded like monoposto members will also have to have them. The news came from MSA's chief scrutineer aparently.

Are you sure, that would be a new one to me. I thought these would have Hewland Mk8 or Mk9 boxes, both having reverse. I think the very, very first FF1600s had road boxes which also had reverse.

Maybe they just told you that to try to stop you spinning - or sometimes it can be a b'stard to get that gear in?

The cars im talking about are the school cars at 3 Sisters, but they also used to hire out classic ff1600s to race (not sure if they are the same ones).
I dont know the year of the cars or the gearbox type but they are definatly just 4 speed with no syncro.
I managed to spin one too (it was wet) but luckily I ended up facing the right way and carried on.

I think they are Mk8/9s which do have a reverse - push the stick right over to the left against the strong spring and push forward...

cheaper to cut a hole in the floor, and use your feet.

I am joking before anyone takes it seriously

I assume if its come from the MSA it will apply to all MSA related events..... not 100% sure though, just a presumption.

Luckily my car is currently at Jedi having a rebuild so they will be doing it as part of the work. Saves having to strip the backend again at some time before August.

Do you have any details on how a reverse is installed?
We have run a ZX10 1000cc engine in the past and will again I'm sure. In the states, nobody runs reverse that I know of.
I was trying to design a reverse using a 12V motor similar to a Honda Goldwing 1600cc motorcycle.
A web site would be great.

Reverse Gear

All

When is this going to be made offical by the MSA?

How are they going to inform drivers ?

Some people are going to make a lot of money and for what. I though there was a rule against reversing on the circuit ?

Well ****ed off

Its a good point SPB. How will they let everyone know? I assume they will contact as many manufacturers as possible, but there are quite a few conversions out there and custom cars. I suppose the best way is to tell all the clubs and get them to enforce things.

The only thing I can think of that makes a reverse gear handy is if you over shoot the grid box on the formation lap.

Has anyone at the 750MC heard anything yet?

From my time around Formula Honda's with an electric motor fitted as a reverse it is rubbish. Most of the guys used to fit it and now I guess you will have to but you wont want to use it cos it's slow and kills the battery. Still the powers that be know best.

You're right Jensen. The reverse is pretty ineffective. Also, if you try to manouvre on track with it you're likely to get a rollicking from the C of C. Ask Fraser Corbyn!

.....we've been forced to keep them, so you mono guys should be forced to have them as well. Mind you, in 18 months using my jedi, ive never used it, and to be honest, i wouldnt know HOW to use it if i had to!!

The new Leastone Formula 5 has a suzuki rf 900 engine. It has an independant diff and the reverse works well with the switch of a lever.

Reverse Gear

Chaps

Just a letter form the Monoposto Club informing us all about this. Needs to be done by August sometime. Not bad for the promotion of club motorsport by the MSA.

This year

Fire ext upgrade £200
Reverse gear £600 plus and going up as more bits added.
(Also if you use it on the track you get to see the CoC for a telling off)

Great one. What is next ?

All the Best SPB

@ loadsatop

dunno why you'd need it, no reversing out of graveltraps even if you knew how to work it.

Just incase you spin to a stop, still on the hard stuff, (and for anyone who doesn't know) you reach down to your right knee, grab the little handbrake type thing, put it up and push the button making sure..

a) you are in neutral or have the clutch dipped
b) there's no gravel trap behind you.

only used it for fun outside the jedi factory anyway.

What's the clarification here btw, reverse gear means....

The electric motor do-dah already fitted to FHondas
or
One of those funky transfere box things kit cars have?

the jedi solution is as per formula honda (starter motor and a modification to the diff). Other companies, like Radical have the 'funky' transfer boxes, but I would have thought the transfer boxes would add even more weight than a start motor? dunno as Ive never been able to compare.
