GP de l'AGE d'OR (Peter Auto)

The grandly named and most enjoyable annual meeting is run by Peter Auto, but will have added interest in 2017 with grids from HGPCA. It is also a round of the FJ Lurani Trophy, and should feature the new PA F2 series as well.

You are hopefully sharing with him at Silverstone so let's hope he survives to allow him to do it.

Mmm, the latest email from PA mentions 'major paddock restructoration' (their spelling ) and resultant lack of space for us all.....

It's usually pretty congested anyway, so doesn't sound too promising! Fingers crossed.

Sounds like a recipe for lots of arm waving and whistle blowing (literally - not the Edward Snowden version) in the paddock.

Hopefully the 60s tents will be right by the entrance as normal, so won't impact us too much....you might need to set up your multi car work area near the 60s enclosure Mike!

Couple of years go they parked me next to the 60s tents, which I wasn't unhappy about (apart from portaloos), but then got moved behind the garages, which was noisy, on a slope and awkward to get in and out of! I'll have 2 CER cars next week, so inside paddock would be easier.....

They were there at Pau in abundance but the whole thing was done with a light touch and everyone ended up reasonably happy with their allocation. Fingers crossed it'll be the same for you...

It seems to be the HVM way of doing it. They were using that technique at Dijon last October. It went from 'you absolutely can't take that space' when we arrived to a free for all by the time event started! So no change there....

This event it will be PA plus the circuit staff, who mostly seem to be gate guardians. Sure it will sort itself!

Be warned, if there is no special agreement with the organiser, this circuit will charge you for any damage done to the rails. Not cheap from some friends experience.

The Group 1/A contingent is well down in HTC. There seems to be an ever increasing number of 'BDA' Escorts. No Rovers a lot less 635's.

Sad but true. Most, not all, of the Escorts are Mickey Mouse or have become something rather better than they were in period and built using the homologation menu to extract the maximum advantage. If they actually insisted on real cars prepared as they were in the actual year they raced, then I think the grid would be far more representative of the class structure.
But this is not a new concept surely, each category "dumbs down" to a degree as competitors work out which cars are competitive in each class, are cheap and practical to build (or restore) and give the best bang for their buck?
The final part is the critical mass theory, when you get a good number of one type of car then by default that car wins more often so newcomers tend to buy that car which increases the numbers which in turn win more often.......
See Historic Formula Ford as an example of that!

Matter of fact, PA grids are doing well. HTC is probably not the best example of their work. Last year, Claude won the overall classification with a Holbay Escort and a '65 Mustang won the TC1 category while pre '66 over 2 litre should not be granted any point. Strange.
Still they have around 30 cars, two TC1 coming from ex French championship (323 and 530 ius). Their main grids host an average of 30% of French competitors.
Simon, except B Gill's Escort, how many authentic?

Peter Auto are the best , but most expensive, to race with.
You get what you pay for!
I know nothing of these tin tops as it's only a matter of time before it becomes cheque book racing like U2 TC
My only gripe with the Peter Auto lot is the scrutes who are brutal
Wonder what their gripe will be tomorrow.

At Spa it seemed to be the local scrutineer who was going out of his way to annoy people, so hopefully with it being in France we will have less aggro!

365, are you kidding ?? Good luck with that hope.

I raced at Spa, Monza, and Nurburgring with U2TC and without any close competition every year the Dijon scrutineers exercised the most extraordinary partisan system of favouritism to their fellow compatriots ... I saw French-owned cars with the most outrageous non-period/non-AppK equipment being waved through by Les Scrootz Francais while conforming Brit & German cars were being blocked on imaginary and non-factual basis.

Every year I faced the possibility of going home early after a joke Scrutineering. I did get totally fed-up, a cliff-hanger every time.

Nick, I do believe what you report and find its a real shame. This kind of attitude should not exist in any country. In those conditions being fed up is quite normal. This should remain a pleasure, not mentioning the price of our toys.

On the HTC, when mixing Group 1, Group 1+, Group 2 and Group A, all depending of the era and relevant Appendix J or Period we should say here more or less, they are very complicated categories.

To normal people they look production and it is only true to the Group 1 cars, then they are pretty much prototypes and all models, depending on the period tuner were different.

A simple example was that in period, there were the Cologne and Broadspeed Fords, the Alpina, Schnitzer and Motorsport cars, base was the same but details weren't.

And as in period, when you talk touring cars, you need heavy scrutineering if you want to keep it correct as well as in depth knowledge but yeah, who cares anymore.

Gerard,
Thanks and I agree. It was particularly annoying because the U2TC Series Technical Scrutineer used my Alfa GTA as a baseline of what an 'original' Alfa GTA ought to be..... Alls well that ends well, I got to race, but nerve-endings very frayed !
