Thanks rdmdog - that will be the car.

Just went off and found the 1992 Symmons Plains SATCC Program, and the Starion isn't listed there - doesn't mean it didn't run, just that the entry wasn't in when the program went to the printer - nothing unusual in that here.

Ron Masing's Starion is listed in the 1991 list as a DNS due to a crash during practice while being driven by his Co-Driver (Arnel?). Having a look at the time (2.36) it seems this time was recorded during practice, and the car was given position 49 on the grid, however it was "damaged beyond repair".

Didn't the Customs regs require the cars to be exported or crushed?

Many of the 2L cars that came didnt pay dutys on the proviso that they would not stay, hence many were sent overseas, at around about Macau time, regularly.

Maybe the same was done for those cars. Imagine all the cars that have been destroyed, or "lost" back to roadies. What a waste!

I thought KB kept one of the 'factory' Starions for himself... and ran it with Tony Scott and Terry Shiel one year at Bathurst in Sutherland Mitsubishi colours?

I think the two 1986 Brad Jones cars stayed with Ralliart until the team finished its Group A operations at the end of 1988. I think one of the cars might have gone to Gary Scott, who campaigned a Starion at Bathurst in 1989 with KB and Terry Shiel. I have a feeling this might be the Ron Masing car. After missing out on a start at Bathurst, Masing raced his Starion at the '92 Winfield Triple Challenge at the Creek. I also have another Starion listed as being driven by Brett Eckford, but I think that might be a mistake.

IIRC, the Xerox Shop Starion was either the ex-Bartlett car that Bartlett ran in various ATCC rounds in 1987 with Hella sponsorship, or it was the ex-Paul Trevethan Starion, which might have been of Group E origin, but I'm not sure. Whichever, it was the Xerox Shop car (with Stephen Bell at the wheel) that was racing at the Symmons ATCC event in 1992.

The Masing Starion was sufficiently slow that they would have needed a discretional to start anyway.

The Starion that GTS300 is talking about in Tassie is the Scotty Taylor Xerox car,
It was sold to Stephen Bell after its time at bathurst was over. Steve ran the car in club cars for a while and then sold it to some one ( Last name Brown - GTS300 might know this )who was first going to run it in non-turbo configeration. He broke his foot badly and the car sat for a while (still in Xerox coulors as it was at Bathurst)

Dean Crosswell (ex V8 Supercar racer) has now got the car and ran it in the Group A/C races at Baskerville in March last year.

The car I believe is ex Brain Sampson Group E car that was run by Sampson and Waldon at Bathurst in 85, some notes all so mention the name Travethan.

Scotty ran the car at Bathurst in 88- DNQ /89 - 21st

On a earlier story - If any one would like to go to the Bathurst Museum and are able to get inside the 84 HDT VK, move the Roll cage padding on the bar above the windscreen and behind the Mirror the bar should have a weld in it, This is the 25 car from 84.
Brock's car (05) has a full bar with no weld

At last visit (some years ago - don't know exactly how many) there was a Starion race car in the showroom of Sutherland Mitsubishi. It may still be there.

Marcos Skaife has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I have seen an ex PWR falcon on the back of a trailer here in good old Noo Zeeland. No idea who has it or what they are going to race against but it was still in the livery it raced at Bathurst in for the konica race last year(#27 I think??)

There were a lot of PWR Falcons built for some strange reason, they were building two a year at one point.

The roll cage inthe O5 car is not the original cage anway it was replaced when the full restoration was done as I beleive that it had the wrong cage in it when it came back from Oversea's?

The time recorded on that info was a 2:36.20, faster than plenty of the cars that werre given a start. The position on the grid makes me think the cars was crashed prior to Qualifying. hence the 2:36 time noc counting towards the grid.

Ill go and have a look at the book!

Having had a quick read of the book from '91, Masings cars was new, and had only seen Eastern Creek for a race as a Sport Sedan, to sort it out.

It seems you are correct Falc, and the car was crashed in the Saturday afternoon practice session attempting to do a quick enough time to be allowed to start. I guess the time listed in Mr De Jongs website may be misleading.

The 2:36 time is only relative, both drivers had to set good times to qualify for the field and one of the teams two drivers was well off the 2:36 pace. During Group A the qualifying minimums were set via classes.

They failed to qualify both drivers, but had the qualified both, could have started in 40th.

That would have put them ahead of
Kiwi Motorsport BMW of Sharp/Sharp/Salwegter
Bates twins factory FX-GT Corolla
The Searle / Griffiths Factory FX-GT
Sala / Stratton Corolla Hatch
The twin V Sprinter fastback of Vernon & Verheyen
Conway / Gardiner Corolla fastback
Wright / Dunford Corolla Hatch
Bob Holden's already veteran Sprinter fastback
Forshaw / Vorst Corolla fastback

Also bear in mind the qualifying cut-off in Group A days was calculated from pole position PER CLASS. The Corollas had to be within 107% of Neal Bates time, not Mark Skaife's weapon. As a turbo car, the Masing Starion had to live up to the Skyline's pace. Comparing to the slowest Bimmer and the gang of four pot Corollas is not representative.

Yep, Cheers

I was dissapionted that the book didnt have all session fastest laps for 1991 as has been the case in other years, for this very reason.

Then this would mean that the car at the Holden Performance Driving Centre here in Queensland is the real deal?

I have read where that car no.65E (do we remember the carton on the front?) was written off in a track accident I think either in late 1971, or early 72! and its no more. Another peice of great history gone! I have seen a replica racing in one of the classes.
